The Snowsports Thread 2014-15

Anyone know if it is possible to get ski passes cheaper than the standard adult price when there is a group of 16? The resort is Tignes.

Thanks

Not normally direct - it's not worth their effort.

Ski passes normally come discounted when buying a package of hotel/flights/transfers/ski hire etc.

Found some new Salomon gloves i quite like for a reasonable price - that'll go on my christmas list. Just need to hunt around for a pair of salopettes now, a lot of the high-end snow equipment shops (snow+rock, ellis brigham) want well over £100 for a pair. Not sure i want a pair that highly priced!

Because of the bargains package holidays are it's usually cheaper to go for a week than a long weekend, unless the "long weekend" is Monday to Thursday. January will probably be cheaper than February but not by much (just avoid half term).

If you wait until a couple of weeks before you plan to go and see what deals are available. You can usually get somewhere nicer for cheaper (but obviously less choice) and you can see where the snow is best.

Where to go? It really won't matter too much for a beginner. If you want the more pretty scenery then somewhere in Austria would be a good bet. Scheffau is nice, pretty and lots of gentle tree lined slopes. The only problem is it's not really a ski in ski out location (which will usually be in the purpose built high rise monstrosities). Andorra or somewhere like Slovakia/Bulgaria are cheap(er) although the last time I went to Bulgaria it was about the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall... Andorra was nice when I went (but about 15 years ago) so worth waiting to see if others have been more recently... Otherwise, most of the resorts in France, Austria and Italy will cater for your needs easily, just a case of looking and seeing which you like the look of (and what deals are available).

Thanks for the help, sorry for the late reply. I'll look closer to the time then, any idea roughly a week will cost then (not wanting the cheapest or most expensive accomodation, so something middle ground) going for a week? I was thinking around 500-700£ PP all in for me and the mrs?

also anyone know good brand of dry trousers to get?

Currently I use my kayaking ones but its not ideal as they're not lined, and have latex seals etc. Was considering buying some Sweet protection ones from sportspursuit (£135 down from ~£300 for last seasons models), however was wondering if theres other quality brands I should look at? (Dont mind paying more if they last a long time)

I'm so badly trying to resist buying new skis. Just because. You know, everyone needs a new set.

Saying that, the mother asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said helmet as mine could do with replacing. I found one I like. Full carbon Sweet helmet. Not sure she wanted to spend 350EUR on me though.

Oh, and anyone know where the best place to get Dalbello boots would be? I can't find anywhere around here which does them. They all stopped selling them and I'm due some new boots. The Il Moros have my name on them. Edit: found a place in Boston. I might have to pick those up this week.

Probably not if going directly. I know someone who had a difficult enough time in Tignes (Early december nonetheless!) for a group of 100+.

You might be lucky if you ask a touroperator, as they have deals in place.

So I ordered 2 ski jackets online to try for fit, both are too big at a small, cant find any in my price range that come in an XS.

Considering really layering up with a softshell that I already have as an outer (not skiing specific, but a walking one), I'm going to courchevel in the last week of january, will i freeze? (base-layer, tee, fleece(?), hoody, softshell

I'd say you're more likely to be too hot than too cold wearing all that.
I usually just wear a tshirt under my jacket.
A proper ski jacket would be a better option though, there's more to it than just the warmth. It'll have snow skirts around the waist and cuffs so you dont get snow inside if you fall, or even a proper interface between pants/jacket/gloves to fully seal you away from the snow. Probably better ventilation too.

thanks touch

Im just a bit bregrudged to spend good money when the chances of me being able to afford to go skiing any time soon are very slim (this trips paid for by work, one off, very lucky)

Ah I really want a trip this year but again my friends just are not interested and I dont really have the finances. :( I have found some great deals but my friends have never been on the snow before. So getting their interest is proving very difficult.

Has anyone used wasteland ski before to book a trip?

I'm off to alpe d'uez on the 20th for a week, then chamonix in jan, st anton in feb and home to Courch in march.

Really can't wait, its the my favourite time of year and its the one thing I excel at; and ultimately live for

Im off to Meribel on the 28th for a week.

Can't wait as per, but I've decided I need some new gear.

Anyone got any thoughts on the North Face Jeppeson jacket and salopettes?

Cant decide between that or the Hickory pass jacket.

I don't understand why reviews seem so scarce for ski gear as opposed to say biking or any other sport.

Weird isn't it, I tend to look at gear in the resort, see what all the park rats and avalanche hunters favour then purchase similar gear when I get home.

I'm a huge fan of Picture Clothing, their suits are awesome and the quality is right up there. I turned down an instructors job this year, but if I'd got it I would have bought the Award jacket and pants, loud and proud!!

also just shelled out rather too much money on a new airbag

you can't put a price on your life, but if you could it would be £569 :p Now need to work out if I can integrate my avalung into it too...
