The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

obviously not. Mines slight faster then that.

Faster in your imagination or belief? :D

spray and pray? The buffer takes around 36 seconds to fill on continues AF 20fps. ive shot motosport and cars do almost half a lap at that time. For walking down the aisle you need to shoot constant 20fps for the whole walk. ive shot someone on the aisle but on the 5d3 and never reached the buffer or shot continuesly. the buffer on the 5d3 only lasts about 9 seconds yet never had an issue.

You clearly have no clue about numbers. At 20 fps you fill the buffer in 12 seconds, and it takes another 36 seconds to clear the buffer if you are using UHS-II slot alone. It's gonna be 110 seconds to clear the buffer if you use dual card backup because the slower slot is gonna be the bottleneck. As for comparison, 1DX-II with CFast 2.0 and D5 with XQD can both shoot almost indefinitely until the card is full with less stressful settings, and clear buffer in 6 seconds with stressful settings (link1, link2). A9 will never be able to do that with crap slow slots.

Ive shot in portrait mode in dim light with no problem(studio work with just a dim modelling light on etc). I will try and post a video up later. Your video doesnt tell much. You pointed your camera at a blank walk in portait mode and quickly cut the video feed. If this was a huge issue, it would have been highlighted all over the web.

If you open "Paint" app in Windows and draw a horizontal line, your A9 will never be able to grab focus on it when shooting in landscape orientation. What a pity! It doesn't even grab focus on this simple subject... That's the price you pay for having all AF points as non-crosstype AF points in one direction. Sony didn't even use interlaced layout or chessboard layout. Even the 5D3 has most of the AF area covered by crosstype AF points.

Then the 1dx and d5 are miserable cameras! seriously you are saying1 5fps is miserable? Do you want 24fps and just shoot video instead? or 60fps? Your the first in the world to think 15fps is miserable

I'm not the first. People around the world are selling (getting rid of) the older 15 fps lenses. You don't necessarily need to get rid of these 15 fps lenses, but their second-hand resales value would be affected over time as more and more people figure out that these are inferior lenses.

Brief translation for screenshot below:

I recently switched from A7R-II to A9. These lenses were purchased along with the A7R-II and do not support 20 fps with A9, so I'm selling them for the newer lenses. These include the f/4 zooms, FE35 1.4, FE55 1.8, Batis85. Would love to sell in a pack. Condition shown as in pictures...

No its 36 seconds until the buffer runs out. You must be using a slow card.

There is tons of videos that show this. google it.

Again your video demonstrated nothing. you cut the video as soon as you turned your camera to portait mode.

And why mention about people all around the world selling there 15fps lenses? What does that prove? Your proof as well shows a screenshot made up of cantonese or japense writing. No clue what that is.

And thats just one person? Where is the figures that show everyone selling up there lenses? And where is the stat that shows that these people selling these lenses are due to it only being able to shoot at 15fps.

Shock horror there are tons of reasons to sell those glasses. Many of them not f2.8 zooms . That alone is a valid reason to sell if you need pro fast glass for the A9

I'm afraid Sony's official website claims 12 seconds (241 / 20 = 12). Are you saying that they are lying in the official specifications?

Make your own video :D However, I don't think you will be glad to post it as when you do the test by yourself you would probably get frustrated... Sorry for letting you know the truth...

I consider 35mm f/1.4 and 55mm f/1.8 to be very practical lenses. Unfortunately Sony's current offerings would cripple A9's performance. Indeed, the Asian market is the largest camera market at the moment. Their moves represent the trend.

Google reviews and videos. Real world demo's show it can shoot 36 seconds.

Ive even tried it myself. i can shoot for half a minute before the buffer is finished.

Just get fast cards

Obviously either Sony is lying or you are lying. The easiest solution would be for you to make a video to demonstrate :D Where's your video for non-crosstype AF points? :p

I agree it does depend upon the lens. Though most of the time i would have a walk around lens. For me that is either sigma 17-70 DC or canon EF 24-105L mk1.
Even my sony mirrorless NEX5R has a some what large 18-55 kit lens which is not that much smaller than my sigma.
I can get the NEX5R in my jacket pockets. I can not do the same with my EOS 7D mk1 !
The NEX5R has the same sensor size ( almost, fraction of mm difference ) as my 7D, though my 7D is much easier to use quickly !
Its that swing and a roundabout again !

Here is a little review/breakdown on my experience with the A9 after 2-3months of owning it.

This review is based on the following kinds of photography i have used this camera for:
  • Travel/Street
  • Portrait
  • Landscape
  • Sports

Below are the pros and cons for each type of genre i used this camera for:

Travel/Street

Pros:
  • First camera to have proper silent shooting with no penalties in banding etc in all light conditions
  • Smaller and lighter then a FF Sports DSLR.
  • Able to upload images to your phone to share with friends and family on the go
  • AF Wide is super reliable for street photography making "hip" shooting easier and faster(My 5d4/5d3 half teh time focuses on wrong subject)
  • Can charge the camera with the same mobile phone charger you most likely will carry with you in your travels(Android based phones)

Cons:

  • Changes lenses in the field can attract lots of dusts as the sensor is exposed(i suggest using zooms vs primes for travel photography)
  • Touch screen is pointless, You cant swipe and touch the menu system etc.

Portrait

Pros:

  • Eye AF works far better than any A7 series camera.
  • EVF set to effects OFF means you can see almost in the dark through the evf or screen unlike OVF when shooting in a dark studio which is common if you want to fully control the lights.
  • Better Buffer and response times when shooting and viewing images during a portrait shoot
  • Skin tones greatly improved on the A9 compared to other A7 series cameras.

Cons:

  • Lower resolution then Some other cameras out there(nip picking) So if you print large size prints, this could be a negative.
  • Cant use Electronic shutter with flashes.

Landscape

Pros:

  • The Dynamic range is as good as all the top DR FF sensor cameras out there in real world usage but where it shines is high ISO DR which is the best in its class
  • The EVF lets you get the shot perfect in first attempt.
  • WB shooting nightscapes are the best i have seen from any of the cameras i have tried(5d3, 5d4, A7r2)

Cons:

  • Lower res then some of the other cameras out there who make big prints

Sports

Pros:

  • AF as a whole is ground breaking in many areas(Tracking, speed, feature set and accuracy) Not missed a shot because of it. Its like cheating when shooting sports with this camera. Point and shoot thats it!
  • The battery life is better then a 5d4, nevermind any of the A7 cameras. I have never ran out of a single battery despite using two on a battery grip. You could probably shoot 12-14hours on two batteries heavily.
  • 20fps makes capturing that crucial moment easier.
  • Buffer rate is brilliant considering it is not using XQD cards. You can shoot Usain Bolt from the start to finishing line before it runs out of buffer at 20fps.
  • During half time/breaks you can dump all the images in your phone/tablet using wifi and send it to press pretty quickly
  • Pro support are now in events . They are currently in US OPEN.
Cons:
  • Anyone that shoots over 10 seconds continues will hit the buffer
  • Ethernet/FTP sending files on the fly is more complex then using wifi and playMobile app at present.
  • No Fast 2.8 glasses above 200 yet. Just the 100.

Conclusion:

overall this camera does everything great but excels in sports/action photography.

It offers base ISO IQ that enables you to capture breathtaking landscapes and portraits and also make a perfect travel camera that is small and lighter then a 1dx2/d5 that has similar specs.

Mirrorless is the future...
