Have been looking at the XM3's and literally was about to purchase a set this week. First foray into Bluetooth and wireless, a pair for the lounge really appeals for late night films, music when away from the PC.

What-HiFi have posted glowing reviews of the XM4's so now deliberating to pay the £100 extra for the new model. Just debating if the XM3's will suffice as both look like great headphones.

I was hoping the XM4s would be just the ticket after hearing how good Sony sound quality is over on head-fis it gets constant praise so it's a bit disappointing to hear it's not quite translated to the wireless XM3s or perhaps 4s. Perhaps does not help I have always felt wired is wired it's hard to topple really.

I currently have the wired Audio technica MSR7bs, a very good mid end closed back headphones (£200+) and will be keeping them in fact sold off my AKG K550s but it does not sound like I would benefit from going Wireless or with Sony XM4s.

if you need wireless flexibility and advantage they offer they are great and convenient but if you are after sound quality wired is better.

I think its better to bug a wireless powered Bluetooth adaptor and convert a wired headphone into wireless, its a bit ghetto looking but cant beat sound quality.

the Sony are great headsets but if wireless is a thing of must then I prefer the amirons myself much more.

if you want noise cancelling then cant beat Sony.

But have to be honest was really impressed with the Sony wf-1000xm3 are excellent, Great sound quality for what you get just wish they did not fall out all the time.

I had the xm3 but was not impressed to be honest, I prefer the sound of the WF 1000xm3 more then the WH-1000XM3. I have listened to quite a few different Sony wireless headphones and the WF-1000xm3 was best sounding, the mids were more present and forward to my ears. I felt all the others were tuned in the typical Sony house sound.

I have not heard xm4 but most reviews say sound same but better noise cancelling. I base base it on that tbh.

Good thing Sony provides the WH XM3 with a fantastic phone app with a built in equilizer so you can tune the sound to your liking

indeed they do and the response to equalisation was not bad but it won't sound the same as a headset tuned for a certain sound from the word go. The only headsets that respond well to equalisation are planar magnetic headsets, the rest provide diminishing returns at best. Don't get me wrong they are good sounding for most but once you listen to more better sounding cans it hard to step back, for most they are excellent.

thx that does seem to be the general opinion on avforums also, ill stick to good ole wired maybe look into better dac/headphone amps.

If you have an XM3, its not worth upgrading to these. Might not be worth upgrading even if you have an XM2, but I have no wireless overhead headphones so Im almost definitely getting a pair of these.

Im just going to wait until they are on sale and also curious to see what the Apple overhead headphones are like (they won't be anywhere near as good sound quality wise but their airpods pro are actually really good)

I have the wf1000xm3. I don't think I've used it since last November or something but used it today in my commute to work today for my return to the office and was pleasantly reminded of how good they are.

But the ghetto style is such a step up. I use the FiiO BTR5 as mine for LDAC Bluetooth DAC & AMP and FiiO FH7 IEMs and the step up is significant. But I guess the price is too.

I went for XM3 as going for a reasonable price at the moment. After at a bit of faff setting up, I got to say I am a fan. Fit my head perfectly and sounds good to me.

Wired sets are better, but for wandering around the room, sitting in another room without being tied is something.

Refusing to pair with my Denon PMA50 - I might be missing something, got them paired to computer so working really well. Very impressed though.

Hi guys,

Sorry, I've not read through all of the previous posts yet, but as a WH-1000XM4 owner of 2 weeks, I'm on the brink of returning of my second pair...

Both sets I've had have suffered with unacceptable "creak" on the left hand side, an issue well documented online - loads on Reddit. It appears to emanate from the speaker hinge, in my case anyway.

What are your thoughts?

I've been messing about with a colleague's XM3's and they are fine. I'm really happy with the sound quality/app features etc. but I can't live with the creaking issue.

You must have been unlucky. I’ve been using my xm3 daily since I bought them . Working fine. Only issue being Sony nobbled the anc slightly in a firmware update to make the xm4 appear a better purchase.

I think I must be unlucky then... I'm getting them from the same highstreet store so will try again. They've had a bad batch obviously.

Managed to get Currys to price match for £220. Would these be the best ANC headphones at that price point?
Did you try the Bose? After getting a couple of iffy pairs of the Sonys I went for them instead - they're excellent...

Picked up a pair of these a few days ago.

The sound isn't really comparable to my AKGs Q701's (I wouldn't expect them to be) but after some eqing they're pretty decent (although I'm still a little underwhelmed). The all around convenience is massive though.

I don't like my XM3's really. They were TERRIBLE early doors with video/voice meetings, but to be fair Sony sorted that out well. My issue is with battery life, which is not very good. I was having a sim race last night and half way through they began to die. Fully charged when I put them on, just died as the night went on. I also think the sound is not that special, though I am not comparing like for like I suppose but I just don't really like them that much.

Comfy mind.

Didn't notice this thread.

Looks like the rave reviews on these might not be quite the full story.

So these. Don't really compare to audiophile cans?
