The ‘Spec me a mower’ thread (was “Cordless mower - is this decent?”)

Discovery of last 5 years was importance of regularly sharpening blade, especially for any moisture on grass
used to use a wetstone and found that grinding wheel on mini-drill did much better/faster job holding it in vice
(like using a sharp pair of shears - n-fold better than shredding a hedge with a hedge trimmer)

This is the one I've just bought. There are a few reviews on YouTube, one where the guy had only had it for a short while and initially raved about it but then in later videos he said it's utterly rubbish in wet conditions but I've seen others where someone is actually mowing in the tipping rain and he says it's decent.

No idea how long delivery will take, hopefully not too long.

Hope you like it!
Let us know what you think.

It’s being delivered on Monday.

We’ve only cut the grass three or four times so far this year but due to the lack of rain, it’s almost all brown now. If it carries on like this, it’ll be months before I even need to unbox the new one.

You've cut the grass that much?

*looks out window*

Erm I may need to see if my dad's old machette is still in the garage, I've not managed to do our back greens once.

Anyone tried the Titan 18V 32cm mower? Screwfix have it in a kit with a strimmer, battery & charger for £150 for the bank holiday. Sounds too cheap to be good, but I've had nothing but good experiences with Titan tools in the past.

My trusted jx90 john deere mower finally broke its drive belt after 19 years. I'd expect a pretty decent bill to fix it. With getting older I struggle now to get it up steps to a higher lawn.
So I've been looking at a 18" mower now, either battery or petrol.
I have around 550mtr2 of lawn

I borrowed my in laws hayter osprey 46 (18")petrol. It's pretty reasonable. I think he paid £440 for it last year. The trouble is & I believe this is with all new petrol mowers, once you release the blade lever, it stops the engine, so you are forever pulling the cord to re-start.
It's completely put me off a new petrol mower.
If cord pulling is too much get one with a push button electric start.

looking for a replacement for my somewhat ancient petrol mower,

it was nothing flash or fancy but looking for a decent replacement ideally self propelled petrol powered

not a huge garden but enough that i'll happily spend £300 or so on a decent mower

suggestions pelase?

currently eyeing up some of the fast and the furious esque hyundai stuff
Hayter are decent but Honda are the best very easy start and reliable drained one of fuel last autumn filled it up in the spring one pull started first time.

I've never mowed in the rain, but I've mowed wet grass without issue - that said it was more "dewy" grass than actually sodden grass. Let me know how you get on!
I've mowed in the pouring rain but I don't recommend it wet grass clogs everything up too easily!

We've got one of the Makita ones that uses 2 batteries, around this time of year they seem to do an offer where if you buy the mower with a set of batteries you can get a freebie via redemption - when we bought ours one of the options was a second pair of 5amp batteries.

It's done well for the last few years, just have to be a little careful of using it when the grass is both long and damp.
Ive got the same and agree only have this issue if it's wet

I have the same with my Ego but think it is because the blade needs sharpened. I just do about a 50% overlap on my runs and it is fine, takes a little longer, but nothing major.
