The steam box preview..

I'm speaking in a hardware point of view. I'm fairly sure that most of these sellers would just stick Windows on it.

That would defeat the purpose of it being a Steam box unless they offer it as an option. I'm pretty sure Steam would not be happy with that since their intention is to get away from windows.

Companies aren't going to sell a gaming machine without an OS that actually plays games? They will just end up with a massive backlash.

Steam will also have to release a compatibility list.

If they don't then yeah, stupid idea.

simple solution would be to have a 'steambox compatible' label or something, maybe even a customised store page when it picks up that you're running on a steambox and only displays compatible games.

Im sure that would be an easy option until more games are made/modded to be compatible

Then what is the point in steam os, you would just buy a gaming computer from these same companies, which then questions the purpose of steam machines.

I'm really confused about what you are trying to say.

The steam machine is not being aimed at people that can build their own PC as it's a losing battle. They are making them to market the PC as a gaming device. They want to get console gamers into the idea of buying one of these and converting to PC gaming and buying games on steam.

"Spark is set to launch in the first quarter in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Steam OS configurations."

That's at least one steam machine that's confirmed to come with Windows.

EDIT: They want to make a small gaming PC that is the same form factor as a console, Steam is just a great way of marketing it and pushing it out there.

EDIT 2: Also note, the Tiki is being sold as a steam machine but has been on sale for ages now. Companies are just making Steam versions of stuff. It's like the Google play editions of android devices.

I have stated this multiple times in the thread.

Not sure what you mean by losing battle.

Naturally, it is a "Steam" box.

I was not aware of this, maybe they have realised that cutting out a section of the market would be bad.
Their focus how ever will be on the Steam OS. If you have read Gabes recent comments then you will know, he does not like windows.

Yes exactly, they are appealing to the nature of a console gamer. Ease of use, form factor etc.

Steam is the brand so it is logical they use Steam, they want people to move away from windows if possible due to the restrictions that come with windows as a developer. Converting console users is just the first step, they are not so short sighted as to have one simple aim such as this. They want to expand their brand.

I know right? Frustrating to reply to too.

Usually I don't reply but I'm making an active effort to improve my social skills.

SteamOS is free, why they are developing it is beyond me.

It makes no difference if someone buys a Steam Machine with Windows or SteamOS, so long as people purchase their games via Steam.

Selling the Steam Machine to PC enthusiasts is a losing battle as proven in this thread. Why would I buy this when I can just buy the parts and build it all myself for less.

It's aimed at people without the knowledge, space, time, or interest in building their own system.

EDIT: It appears I have made a right mess of this by possibly replying to the wrong people at random times.

I still don't really see the point of these?
Especially the expensive ones....I mean if your paying that much why wouldnt you just build a custom PC yourself?
I can understand the console priced ones but the more powerfull ones i think id just stick with my own built pc.

Literally read the post right above yours. It's fairly simple.

I get that they're aiming it at people who aren't us.
But why would these people not just buy a gaming PC now? They're not going to suddenly buy one because it's got steam slapped on it.

Steam is marketable. Microsoft aren't going to let people start marketing Windows as some amazing gaming platform. The PC needs something they can use to sell it to people that don't have a clue.
