The Suez Canal is currently not blocked

As above, it'd have been piloted by someone who works at the Suez right, not just the regular captain?

Why does it have a different name on the side? Presume that's legal and just lazy?

Evergreen is the name of the company, Ever Given is the name of the ship. But actually it is common to change the name and registration of a ship when you are dealing with "difficult" situations.

Currently waiting in the anchorage off Port Said to go through the canal southbound. According to AIS this morning, Ever Given’s still anchored in the Great Bitter Lake, roughly 2/3rd’s of the way along the canal, travelling north to south. If she’s still there when we make the transit, I’ll try and take a photo of her if she’s still there, and I’m not on watch in the engine room at the time.

Top man! Please do!

Making a complete second canal would, as you say, probably be the most sensible option for preventing this sort of thing happening again. But Egypt is noted for not spending money on the canal as it is. I doubt if they'd spend money on making the canal better than it is.
Looks like they did spend money on making a 22 mile long parallel channel in 2015
Suez Canal
  • 1869 waterway first opened

  • 2015 canal expanded to include a 22 mile parallel channel

  • 120 miles long

  • 205m wide

  • 24m deep

Will be interesting to hear what responsibility the two canal pilots and the canal authority accept for the ship getting grounded.

Presumably the pilots are doing something worth doing as the ship they're on goes along the company owned canal.

It will all be the fault of the Captain and Crew...

At least that's what the official face saving story will likely be.
