Maybe you should do a session with Matt, get some pointers from someone who is actually there with you?
If your low back is getting involved in the BORs, try doing inverted rows instead. You can do them from a barbell in a rack or from a suspension trainer - either way it's a great upper back exercise and takes the low back out of it completely. Also no need to fanny about loading a bar.
They can be done on a dining room table, too.

I may give inverted rows a go, but BOR's really light up my mid-upper back nicely, adding weight to the inverteds is a bit harder (no weight vest).
