The tesco value thread

not all value products are good quality re-branded goods

the tescos value chocolate and hazlenut spread is very poor quality

however i find the asda own brand as good as nutella :)

the tesco value bran flakes used to be very good quality but they appear to have changed in the last few months to a far inferior product (cardboard :( )

i occasionally feed my cat the value tuna but on certain batches she won't touch it!

would be great if we could compile a list of whats value products are good...or is there a site somewhere??

Not a dig at you but I feel some people get a bit hung up on making sure their food looks like it's been laid out for an arty photo, as long as it's healthy then that's good enough for me.

It's not the appearance for me, it's the lack of any texture that puts me of especially on value tuna. The normal supermarket tuna however is fine.

Moral of this thread Value is sometimes the same as the other stuff, sometimes its just different looking but otherwise is exactly the same
Especially true when it comes to value meat, it's usually the same as the cheaper supermarket meat, it's just different sizes/weight.

Another vote for the chopped tomatoes and kidney beans, some of the canned fruit is really good too, ie peaches, a great product of the EU's common agricultural policy.

And I'm a big fan of the value smoked salmon (slices, not trimmings).

Also, I think the Tortilla Chips are great, good value for money and they taste better than some branded ones. I hate flavored tortilla chips, and the value ones are just plain great.

A few Tesco value things I've experienced:

Beef - The leftovers from when they were preparing the "Finest" beef.

Bourbons - Not sure but they definately taste different to standard Tesco bourbons. Crumblier as well.

Bleach - Nitro Mors that didn't sell in Afghanistan.

Cola - Watered down battery acid.

Bread - Is this really bread? The loaf I had was of an odd texture akin to the milky roll thing that the kids have. Bleached flavoured clay.

Mind you half of the value range is decent enough, the other half not so decent.

Greenall's distillery in Warrington make Value Vodka. It's basically ethanol shipped in and watered down with flavourings. Greenall's own gin + vodka is properly distilled.

I just flatly refuse to eat any value meat, but saying that I never buy value products anyway.

Don't forget custard creams!

Agreed - there's something quite addictive about these, particularly when I come home from the pub with a raging case of the munchies :D :p

Another vote for the chopped tomatoes and kidney beans

The value chopped tomatoes are great - we buy them all the time. Can't say I was impressed with the kidney beans though - I used them in a chilli once and despite simmering it for ages the beans still came out hard.

The value tomato soup is great to use as the base for a bolognese sauce or such like and it's not bad eaten on its own with a bit of crusty bread - avoid the value chicken soup though, as it's rank. You can use it as the base for a white or carbonara-type sauce for pasta, but it's horrible on its own.

The bog roll is truly awful though ...

Personally, I couldn't give a toss about appearing to be a cheapskate - I don't go in for 'brand snobbery' if I can get something of similar or acceptable quality for half the price. Usually we'll try the value version of a product and if it's crap, we'll go back to the normal supermarket own brand or the 'high street' brand.

Agree with Bear about value meats, I would never touch them - only go for the good quality stuff that I know has been reared in a humane way and not battery farmed (like some chicken is).

Love other value foods though - mostly the biscuits as already mentioned - cannot go wrong with them!!

tesco baked beans are far superior to any i have had (not value, the ones in the blue packaging).
Also the ASDA cheapo chocolate (as above) is very good, dark = bourville, white = milkybar (almost).
ASDA mansize tissues are also as good as kleenex imho.

Value stuff is rank, avoid.

There is a reason why they are "value". It doesnt take a genius to work out what makes it "value".

Much like Supermarket petrol...

Just old, packed with gunk, and ruins the insides (not just he car...)

I dunno, I like value level ketchup. Seems tangier than heinz and less sweet than the supermarket.
And bourbons + custard creams. (No other biscuits though)

I don't really shop in supermarkets though, except for lunch at work I go tescos sometimes. I buy from independant shops for all my fresh food on my weekly shop. (bakery, butcher, deli, greengrocer, booze shop)
Buy all the tinned stuff, toilet paper, cleaning stuff etc. from a supermarket, and that aint a lot of stuff because most of what I eat is fresh, if i'm feeling lazy i'll order a takeaway as oposed to a ready meal or something.
Firstly for quality, secondly, don't like that we're losing small shops to these giants, thirdly, they don't treat their staff well (I should know I worked in supermarkets for years as a student)

One thing I do remember to be good, tesco cheese and tomato pizza, not the frozen one, had the value pizza once because it looked simple and easy, it's not bad had a it a few times now.
