The truth about 1920x1080 on a 27" display

Well to be psuedo-scientific I have used my 27" 2560*1440 monitor on 1920*1080 for the last few hours and whilst at first I though 'God this is pants' I quickly got used to it.

Of course it's not so good, I can't have a video playing all the time whilst still having Firefox looking nice and big at the same time. But I do think that people are way too over critical of it, it's really not that bad and the longer I use it the easier it becomes on the eye. Had I not bought a 2560*1440 monitor and seen the difference then the difference would be much less pronounced.

Its amazing how quickly we can adapt to new situations. At uni my laptop is 15inch 1366x768, when I go home I go to my still small 19inch 1440x900, but it seems massive for a few days. When I go back to uni, the screen seems tiny until you get used to it.

Exactly. I had a 1920*1080 24" for about 3 years on a decent Dell monitor and I couldn't complain about, all in all was excellent.

Now have 27" 2560*1440 and it's amazing but given just the couple of hours that I used the 27" at 1920*1080 my eyes had adapted, moving back up was great but it is all relative.

[Sorry can't believe I quoted Friends!]

If you still have the entire screen filled it will look way worse than any native 1920x1080 screen.

One problem with that is that you change your workflow, on 2560x1440 I use Windows 7 hotkeys Windows key + arrrow left (or right) all the time to get two windows next to each other. On 1920x1080 I don't do that for anything but explorer windows, just alt tab a lot more (or turn the second monitor on ;)).

Very true it just changes the way you use what you have. Of course when I went back to 1920*1080 I made adjustments and to be honest it was fine. OK 2560*1440 is much better but I don't think 1920*1080 is so bad on 27" when you make those adjustments and work with what you have.

I just wish 1920x1200 was more popular, I've had my Samsung SM206BW 20" for five years and I'm still in no hurry to upgrade it, simply because 1920x1080 is only going to give me more space horizontally. An extra 30 pixels vertically is nothing.

I know this sounds a bit silly but I never tried 1920*1200. Running it now and it is MUCH better than 1920*1080. It is much easier on the eye in the short term, but I'll give it a couple of hours and see how it feels.

1920 x 1200 is great on a 24" compared to 1080 then 1440 is another leap again imo but yes you adapt but when you go high res again you go wow again

I tried going 1920x1200 24" to 1920x1080 23" 120Hz but I could not get used to it, it felt like I was playing on a 19" TFT again except abit wider lol.

My next upgrade will be 27" 120Hz. I will probally hold off for a year or two see what comes out then - hopefully 2560x1440 27" IPS 120Hz! - yes please! I'll start saving now!

well ive just gone from a 24 1920 x 1200 to a 27 2560 x 1440 and i dont think i could go back down now

i think as you can tell from the thread everyone has their own preferences but a 24 at only 1080 for me doesnt cut it it would have to be a 1200 for me im afraid, if i went to another 24 but i would only do that if i couldnt use a 27 at the res above makes so much diference
