The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

I ordered the GX80 and the 12-32 kit lens. Jessops called today to confirm the delivery address, I asked about when it's expected to come in stock and was told late May, possibly early June. Gah! I hope it arrives before my holiday.

:( I hope he was being pessimistic! I'd heard rumours of them getting to the UK on the 8th and then out to stores and customers in the few days after that.

My 12-35 f2.8 came a while ago and I have no camera to put it on because I sold my G6! :(

So I'm pretty much set on a GX8 or GX80 for next month. Any one able to advise on lenses?

The 100-300mm seems pretty great value for nature shots, the 100-400 is out of my price range. The kit lens is 14-42 on the GX8 and seems to perform ok, there's the 14-150 available too. Any stand out lenses to have a look at?

I've also started looking at the telephoto options which are out there.

The recent cashback deal on the Olympus 75-300 makes it temping, but from what I've read and looking at sample shots, the Panasonic 100-300 is a fair bit sharper across the focal length.

Also, if you are going for the GX80, early indications suggest that the 100-300 IS will work in harmony with the in body stabilisation, resulting in an enhanced IS.

I also heard rumours of them arriving on the 8th and being quickly distributed, fingers crossed. I am quite surprised that Amazon haven't got them listed yet as a preorder item.

Any advice on bags? Looks at something quite small which will hold 3 or so lenses.

The Panasonic 14-42mm MK2 is a decent daylight walkabout lens. The 14-140mm is a minor optical miracle in that it's sharp through it's whole range.
If you want a single daylight travel lens, this is it.

The 100-300mm is a little soft at the long end wide open. The trick with this lens is to keep the shutter speed high and stop it down to f7.1 to get optimism IQ out of it. It's one of Pansonic's older lens designs, so keep the AF set to a small central box to get the best response from it.

If you want great indoor/low light lens, take a look at the 15mm PanaLeica.

Don't forget that Olympus lenses work perfectly on Panasonic bodies, but you do lose the in-lens stabilisation and have to rely on the IBIS in the GX8/GX80 bodies.

I really like the sound of the dual stabilisation so will prob stick with Panasonic lenses. If the 14-140 is as good as you say I think I'll pay extra for that rather than the 14-42 kit. That would mean I could have:

Prime at the wide end for family pics (maybe Pana 20mm as suggested?)
14-140 to cover daily duties
100-300 for bird duty

Should be a nice package, I'll probably upgrade to the 100-400 when prices drop.

Don't forget you only need dual is for the telephoto length. The body is with four stops is really needed with short focal primes

These two arrived today.

Panasonic 20mm 1.7
Oly 45mm 1.8

In other news, it appears the GX80 shipment have arrived at Panasonic UK and look to be preparing to head to retailers :). Someone over at DPreview has a partner that is associated with Panasonic.

Looks like the wait won't be too much longer now. Perhaps in our hands by Friday? Maybe..

Good choice of lens. I love my think tank retrospective 5. Great bag. They do different sizes but the 5 takes my em5 with 40-150 lens plus teleconvertor in full with space for 3 or 4 other lenses too and general nick naks

Here's hoping! Sick of waiting now. I shouldn't pre-order stuff.

Nice lenses, have/had both and really like both. (sold the 20mm to help get the 12-32)

Collecting my Olympus E-M5ii body, 12-40 and 40-150 with TC today. Also I decided to buy a used E-M1 body on TP as I'm not fond of changing lenses in the field and I thought it was quite cheap.
When I've finished selling the rest of my Canon gear I'll have more than enough to get the 300 F4 and the macro lens, the transformation will be complete.

I've looked at a few youtubes on using and customising these bodies but frankly I've found them confusing without having the bodies in my hands.
The leap from Canon to m4/3 is a big step for me and will put a strain on my ageing brain but I'm looking forward to the challenge!

Heads up for anyone wanting the GX80!

Wex currently have it in stock!

There are very limited numbers according to the sales adviser that I spoke to on the phone early this morning. She wasn't able to confirm if I'd be able to place a new order and there be enough stock available to get one, was told I would get a call back. However, 30 mins later it has appeared in stock on their site.

I have cancelled my order at Jessops and got an order in at Wex, it's currently in the packing stage. :D

Does Wex show the lens specs anywhere? The double lens deal looks good value but the 14-140 lens is pretty good too and hugely flexible.
