The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

What sold you on the gx80 vs the gx8? I'm trying to decide between the two.

The 12-32 lens looks impressive for a tiny kit lens.

Mostly, its size and the new in body stabilisation (looks just incredible, some hand held clips look like they were shot on a gyro rig).

I want something that can give me more control than my RX100, but not be too large in size. It's more than a touch smaller than the GX8.

Edit: I do wish it had a 20mp sensor though

The GX80/GX85 manual is up - https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/dscoi/DMC-GX85/P_PP/guideUSA.pdf

Am currently trying to decide on which equivalent 35mm(ish) lens to go for.

Panasonic 20mm 1.7 MKii (£150 second hand) or perhaps the Olympus 17mm 1.8 (£240)

The Oly is faster focusing but the Panasonic is sharper.

Tempted to snap up the Panasonic for the price.

Is there anything else in this focal length that I should be looking at?

Had the same debate with myself 2 weeks ago, went for the Oly.

The Pano is sharper when really pixel peeping but otherwise the Oly wins on everything (except price) I tried both on my camera and the Oly felt like the nicer better built lens and the AF is kind blowingly quick.

It produces a fantastic image too, I'll post some up later.

The 20mm Panny is tiny and has a kind of undefinable optical magic which I loved, but the AF is mediocre, the MF extremely slow and it produces horrible banding at high ISOs on some Olympus bodies (for example my E-M5, not sure which others). This might be fixed on newer bodies.

Another thing that swung it for me was that I missed the 35mm length and the Oly was close for that.

Definitely not an easy choice, but I have gone with the Panasonic 20mm, paid £145 for it. The cheapest Oly 17mm is a grey market model for £244.

I would prefer it to be closer to 35mm.. but I can't justify the extra right now.

I am after a focal length of 35mm in 35mm equivalent, the Sigma would result in being 60mm in the 35mm equivalent, too long for my intended use.

I think I might be ok with the Panasonic, Flickr is filled with great looking images taken with it, also seen a few videos of the AF speed, it isn't too bad. I don't know whether the Panasonic's DFD focusing technique will speed things up a little?

Shall see, if I can't get on with it I'll be able to sell it on.

my 14-42 died..
so just received a 75-300mm II and a 12-50mm.. that should cover me for while until i start playing with the prime lenses!!
question, where can i get some lens hood from?

two of best lenses I own the 40-150mm is true excellence and equal in sharpness to the 75mm at same aperture ,the 75mm makes things dreamy though for head shots .

I have just purchased a kipon canon ef mount and purchased a 50mm f1.4 going to see how this goes for dog shots at the shows .
Also now have the option to mount big canon tele lenses if I should care .or maybe a sigma 150-600mm nice 300-1200

Olympus summer cashback has started again ... looks to be slightly lower cashback than last year (though may be offset by similar decrease in retail prices)

OM-D E-M5 Mark II £75
OM-D E-M10 Mark II £75
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1.1:8 £50
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75‑300mm 1:4.8-6.7 II £75
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9‑18mm 1:4.0-5.6 £100
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14‑150mm 1:4.0-5.6 II £100
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 Macro £75

Got the 9-18mm last year and been telling myself since then that I'd get the 75-300 if it came up this year ... which it has!

So I'm pretty much set on a GX8 or GX80 for next month. Any one able to advise on lenses?

The 100-300mm seems pretty great value for nature shots, the 100-400 is out of my price range. The kit lens is 14-42 on the GX8 and seems to perform ok, there's the 14-150 available too. Any stand out lenses to have a look at?
