****The Ultimate Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 Noobie Guide Thread****

Please don't misunderstand me, I was very pleased with your guide and I appreciate the work you put into it. I really had no trouble at all using it. It's just the installer itself and the files it downloads.

Others probably won't have a problem, so I can only assume it's my rig. But I do like to tinker if something doesn't work, my point of criticism being that the method of the installer prevents me from doing this in an acceptable way.

Just picture anything I say with my tounge firmly in my cheek, i'm not having a go mate. :D

Congratulations on posting the most comprehensive game thread I've ever read & Thanks, I only wish some more posters would put in the same amount of effort to promote whatever they are in to.
I'll show the thread the respect it deserves & will pick up a copy & give it a Blast.
Thanks again.

Kind words malc, if you like space sims you will fap over this. :)

Interesting matty, maybe it is easier then to just choose the barebones... or maybe ticking "download everthing" and then deslecting what you don't need on the next screen may be a good idea. In fact if I remember rightly I may have read someone saying about the downloaded downloading the wrong VP's...

I'm goin got research this tonight and if necessary edit the guide to make it quicker and more painless. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Was also playing agian last night and I am determined to beat it on Insane level... &&&& me it's hard and your wingmen die a LOT. I WILL do it though, even if it kills me. :D

Yeah guys try configuring the updater to take out the old VP's, that should speed things up considerably.

All good things come to those who wait... and wait.... and wait... :p

It is the VPs for me that it always stops on. Just do everything and untick the VPs. I forgot that you download the new ones anyway. gonna try this now

edit - nope still takes years even when ou untick the vps. its on fs_port3_1_1.vp. no idea why its getting this when i told it not to get the vps. im presuming i have them in the downloaded stuff

Try the barebones instead and download the campaigns etc seperately.

i installed it all last night ok and also the bab5 standalone.
i haven't played any of it yet but i'm wondering if there is anything to setup on the bab5 game? its using the old 3.6.9 exe and there is nothing selected in the mod tab, so thats already different from the freespace2 setup procedure.

Bab 5 is completel stand-alone and I think it uses the older .exe. The Bab 5 team also said they're not probably going to update it any more either. :(

You can try pointing it to the .10 .exe but I don't know if this works or not...

Ohhhh are you looking for Freespace 2? Sorry I didn't click then. :o

Why don't you just download it... slow connection?

Men use joysticks. Fact. :p

Seriously though, half the fun is using an analogue stick to pilot the ship... mastering it is hella satisfying. Mouse feels un-natural for any space or flight sims imo. :)

oh ok. Only i can get a wingman extreme for £6 with the 9pin - usb adapter or spend 17 on a new thrustmast t stick x. I read somewhere that the wingman is bad for controlling freespace because of an axis that makes it roll too much or something

Don't get a Saitek Cyborg Evo... I have one at home in the UK and the center is so stiff that it makes minute flight adjustments almost impossible, I find myself lurching all the time with it. My old Sidewinder 3D Pro was the best I have ever used in regards to "feel". No idea why MS stopped making sticks, they were damn good.

fudge following the guide, I'm stuck on selecting the Flags on the "features" tab on the Open launcher, there isn't anything in the drop down box :-/

Flags? You mean the screenie as shown in the guide?

I'm off to the local PC place to look at joysticks... i'll let you know any good ones that I think are comparable ot my old 3D Pro in terms of feel. :D

I just went out and bought a Saitek X-52 flight system form my local plonk. Feels MUCH better than the Cyborg and has literally a gazbillion buttons and hats and I hear it even does the dishes. gets good feedback anyway. :D

I'm going ot give it a blast then let you know...

360 pad is alright actually, surprisingly playable for this game, but not as good as a dedicated flight stick imo.

Taken from a joystick thread I posted in yesterday:

Well guys I went out today and picked up a Saitek X52 from the local store...

First impressions were mixed, but after using it for a couple of hours it's got better. The joystick is well built and has a TON of fully programmable buttons, combined with 3 modes essentially tripling the potential number of programmable commands.

BLue LED's look gash but can be dimmer to nothingness or turned off. Throttle feels alright and can be tuned for slide resistance. Some of the "slider wheels" (extra axis) are placed in rather awkward positions and aren't that easy to manipulate... but i think this can be solved by tweaking the deadzones and i'm going to try that in a bit.

Anyway the important bit... how does it feel in games? Well as we all know Freespace 2 is the perfect test for any joystick... it's a fast-twitch space combat sim where accuracy is key. Does the X52 deliver? Well... yes and no really. Responsiveness is MUCH better than my Saitek Cyborg Evo, but my only real quibble is that in true Saitek fashion, the center of the stick is nowhere near as responsive as you want it to be, which makes minor adjustments a real pain, and targeting those nimble fighters in heavy dogfights can be a bit of a pain. However I am getting much better with it, so some hours training definately help, so I will see how it goes and if I don't like it will return it next week.

All in all though having all the extra buttons is a god-send, and really useful for pumping out orders and minimising interaction with the keyboard. I will expiriment with the mode switches at some point to see if I can use one mode for fighting and then one for comms and one for something else.

So far i'm giving it a 7.5/10 and will re-assess in a couple/few days. :)

EDIT - WOOOOO was browsing th Saitek foruma nd noticed someones made a X52 profile for Freespace 2... it has a SHIPLOAD of commandes mapped for every mode. Awesomeness, will try it ASAP. :D

Can't get the Freespace profile working st the moment though... need to play around a bit more. :)

FS2 campaign is undoubtedly WAY ahead of the first two (as good as they were, I still really like them). Silent Threat Reborn is apparently a big upgrade to the original though, it's been tweaked to hell and back. :)

Heatsinked, awesome stuff, glad to hear it! :D

Not sure about the SW2 issue im afraid... maybe try the official FS2 Source forums?
