****The Ultimate Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 Noobie Guide Thread****

this is takin the ****

I've been dying to give this a try but the update process has been running for 6+ hours now

Like I said above, don't bother doing the full install, it is a total waste of time, you only need the source 3.6.10 exe, all the fancy special effects etc come from the MediaVP's you've downloaded earlier. :)

Yeah guys try configuring the updater to take out the old VP's, that should speed things up considerably.

All good things come to those who wait... and wait.... and wait... :p

It is the VPs for me that it always stops on. Just do everything and untick the VPs. I forgot that you download the new ones anyway. gonna try this now

edit - nope still takes years even when ou untick the vps. its on fs_port3_1_1.vp. no idea why its getting this when i told it not to get the vps. im presuming i have them in the downloaded stuff

i installed it all last night ok and also the bab5 standalone.
i haven't played any of it yet but i'm wondering if there is anything to setup on the bab5 game? its using the old 3.6.9 exe and there is nothing selected in the mod tab, so thats already different from the freespace2 setup procedure.

Try the barebones instead and download the campaigns etc seperately.

Bab 5 is completel stand-alone and I think it uses the older .exe. The Bab 5 team also said they're not probably going to update it any more either. :(

You can try pointing it to the .10 .exe but I don't know if this works or not...

Can anyone here recommend a suitable joystick to use with this game (and other flightsims as well)? me son has done a few levels but the mouse and keyboard just ain't up to the job!:p
The two I'm looking at are the:
"Logitech attack 3" joystick for £18:30 and the "Thrustmaster T-flight stick
X" joystick for £19:54
I'm leaning more towards the thrustmaster atm due to reviews I've read.

I've been playing the Freespace 1 campaign since Tuesday, it's really good fun and the GFX's look excellent.

Cheers for the guide, the game is a bargain for £4

Heres 5 pics from the first actual mission. although the framerate stays at around 60 it still seems 'jumpy' in parts

Had a look in both my local shops today, A good look an all, Nowt doing as yet, I'll try the 2 stools on the market tomorrow before I order it.

Ohhhh are you looking for Freespace 2? Sorry I didn't click then. :o

Why don't you just download it... slow connection?

Personally I think FS2 is a perfect demonstration of how to implement mouse+kb control in a space sim, I find it really intuitive and relatively straightforward to use (although dogfighting with highly manoeverable foes does sometimes require a lot of mouse reseating!). Since playing FS2 3 years ago, I haven't been able to get into spacesims which lack mouse support at all (e.g. I-War 2).

Maybe worth tweaking the sensitivity a little.
