****The Ultimate Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 Noobie Guide Thread****

bah turns out it just for one of the missions, it works on the others, now it bloody crashes after playing a certain amount of time...jeez..will it end with all these problems >.<

The first thing I found was that this joystick is harder to use in combat than a mouse. This is down to a form input lag (which I seem to recall was the case with me old wingman jobbie too)

Thats not good. Im about to get either a MS Sidewinder precision 2 or Wingman extreme 3D. Which 'old wingman jobbie' did you have?

It was the "logitech wingman attack", had it about 7-8 years ago, iirc 4 button, 2 axis and a throttle. It was VERY basic by todays standards. I tried the thrustmaster in "commanche 4" yesterday and it reacted very similarly to the me old wingman attack, and posed no probs at all when flying the helicopter, in fact I'd say it was a bit more responsive and the rudder/twist function is well useful.
I'm of the opinion that its down to how the game runs that makes using a joystick in freespace difficult rather than the joystick itself, I had none of the "lagging" in commanche 4 that I have in freespace 2.
Theres one level in freespace 2 where you're a spy and have to take out some sentry guns and cargo containers, then a troop ship jumps in full of civvies and you destroy that too, then everyone left turns on you and you've gotta hold 'em of till help arrives. Well, with joystick I tried this level what, must've been 8-9 times and died every attempt. tried it with a mouse and did it one go without any difficulty.
On slower targets, the joystick is rerasonable, but against more nimble targets, you've got a problem trying to track, especially when trying to trying a deflection shot (firing in front of the target so they run into the gunfire). I doubt that any joystick around would be a responsive as a mouse in this game, it looks like its coded to have this lagging effect there to make it more realistic.

Thats pretty stupid. Imagine turning the wheel of a car or joystick on an aeroplane and there being lag...whoops, just missed the turn off due to lag and caused a 15 car pile up

My thought exactly although its probably not as pronounced as I'm saying it is. It really only has an effect when in combat with very nimble enemy craft. I'd really like to try another joystick to see if this is a problem with just the thrustmaster or applies to all joysticks but I'm of the opinion that its the game.

Just finished the FreeSpace 1 'mod and am now just starting on the FS2 with all the nice graphics.

Looks brilliant - love all the work.

As far as the daft '\' issue on the tutorial - I just skipped the first tutorial and got round the bug that way. The skip button is top right on the same screen where you commit to the mission.

Thank you Richdog for taking the time and effort to create this guide. I played the originals as soon as they hit the shelves. Next to Tie Fighter, they are my favourite space sims of all time so far. Nothing has even come close!

Just in case others are interested, I followed this guide to the letter and it works perfectly in Windows 7 Build 7000.

I am absolutely gobsmacked at just how beautiful these games look now, after all this time. I got my SideWinder 2 joystick down from the attic and I just can't stop playing!

Again, thanks Richdog

Oh the only thing I can't get working is the throttle on the SideWinder 2... Freespace 2 has never detected it when configuring the controls. It's a very minor issue, one that has been present since I originally bought Freespace 2. If anyone knows how to get it working, please do let me know :)

Anyone had experience playing the GOG version on Win7 x64? Any problems? I'm so very tempted to buy this right now, and I probably will anyway, but would like to know in advance if I'm gonna be frustrated or not...

Sold! This was one of my favourite games when I was a little younger, now I'll be able to buy a joystick to sruly experience it. Any recommendations on a good stick? What's the Saitek like? I've got the Cyborg keyboard and mouse, it'd be nice to have the full set :)
