Being a wannabe connoisseur of sausages I'm trying to better a sausage I had in a sandwich some 10 years ago, but am failing.

I used to be an air conditioning engineer and travel the country installing them. On the main Hastings to London road (A21) there was a roadside snack van that made the very, very finest sausage and egg sandwiches. He bought the sausages from a farmshop but never said which one, preferring to be a middle-man and sell them on himself, guarding his secret.

Anyway, he's moved on since and the particular farmhouse still remains a mystery. So, in the quest to match it, I've tried other farmhouses, local butchers and typically the supermarkets. The nearest I've come close to finding a sausage of the same quality is the Tesco Finest Pork and Herb range. They are absolutely superb, despite being a notch below my all-time fave. I tried the Tesco Finest Aberdeen Angus Beef range this morning and as nice as they were, they didn't compare to the Tesco Finest Pork and Herb.

Is there a superior sausage out there?

ha-ha sorry Tesco Finest is not a good sausage. Unless you like the cheap rubbish.

Go to farm shops and try there ranges. Even better get a sausage machine of ebay. Then go to your butchers who can supply you with sausage skins and meat.

There dead easy to make and are absolutely sublime. Mixed game sausage F T W especially with a port sauce..

Red wine and onion beef sausages are also great.

In all seriousness, a decent local farm shop selling venison sausages are usually the most succulent and with the most vibrant taste.

say what now? Cheap sausages are so full of rubbish it's pretty disgusting, then you cook them and loads of water comes out. Nice.

Proper sausages from a butcher > *

9 times out of 10 'proper' sausages from a butcher are full of rubbish too :)

I don't care what they have in them, however, as long as it isn't gristle, won't make me ill or isn't edible. They taste nice and thats enough for me.

You'd probably have better luck trying out some of the various 'wursts' from Germany. At least they are guaranteed to have a high % of meat in them unlike some of what passes for sausages in this country.

pre-cooked cumberland ring from the "deli" in tesco :D

absolutely fantastic, and the last one i bought was 10p cos it was going cold :P

Ragh not another food thread, first curry now sausage *runs off to get food*. Got to agree wit Gilly on this one, cheap sausages taste great to me and don't cost the earth. Saying that if i ever came across any bone in them id probably never eat one again as I'm really squeamish about things like that.
