do you know them disks that you get with some pc resellers where it looks like a customised ghost image that you can boot from directly and has the image on that same dvd also?
how do you do this?
They probably just customise Norton Ghost...

They usually use the OEM Pre-Installation Kit, and a customised image etc...

This is where I'm going to be a bit thick and ask (even after looking at the pictures on the link) where is this REPAIR function?
Besides my own copy of XP I've borrowed another four copies off friends since this thread was started and none of them give me the option to REPAIR after the original Recovery Console repair option.
The left picture is what I should see but the right picture is what I see on all five copies of 3 x Professionals and 2x Homes -

hmm interesting didnt notice this before....

perhaps its cos u need a damaged or previous xp copy to be detected 1st/

Edit will see at work... cos this could save us a lot of hassle if theres a repair option I always thought there was only a repair console.

you press enter to install, then it checks for previously installed versions of windows.
it finds the existing one and gives you the screen on the left

On all five versions I hit ENTER and it takes you to the next step on the installation with no R or REPAIR option

Looking at that, Pro has it and Home doesn't....

I have 3 x Professionals and 2 x Homes - all do the same

Anybody point me in the direction of the XP that does it?

I've got two copies of XP Pro and tried them last night and I don't get the repair option either. If I choose my windows installation and press enter it takes me to another screen which hasn't got repair on either. I've obviously got the first repair option that everybody gets that takes you to the recovery console.

Always worked fine for me :\. You can transfer the bit's needed to the hard drive and set it up so that the recovery console option appears as an OS in the OS selection screen.

i am having loads of fun trying out nlite rather unsuccessfully, i am at the drivers stgae but it seems to be beyond me for now
What is beyond you? Can I help? I've added you to MSN. We can chat about it if you want.

its only usefull, if you haven't run windows update, otherwise your files are likely to clash with the installed ones, asking for trouble

best bet is to put the hd in another pc, take your files, then format it and start over

This sounds like a cunning plan; could you elaborate a little on how to do this please?

Best thing to do is: Re-install your OS, install all your drivers, programs you always install etc... Defrag, tidy up then take an image. Anythings goes bad, load the image! :)

I'm not letting this lie until I can do it :D

Here are pictures of both XP Pro and XP Home and what happens after you press ENTER and as you can see both Pro and Home are identical and absolutely no sign of a REPAIR or R option.
When you press L on the last picture it starts installing windows.
this happens on all 5 XP's that I've borrowed and I've even bought another one home today to test.

Anybody any ideas whats going on?

One idea has come to me and that all this is being done from BOOT UP and not when Windows has loaded.

always done it from boot, mainly because the reason for doing it is that the pc wont load windows :)

cracking thing to know as previously mentioned, the majority of your apps remained installed. you just need to activate windows and office.

So can you explain why all six copies of XP don't give me the option to Repair?

:( i cannot explain it, but will try to find out.

very weird that you dont see it, this is the exact same way you can do it in win 2000 also.

i will try to set up a spare machine and video if i can get time.
