'The Union'

Because that's the feeling I get from scottish people I know, that they don't want to be part of the uk. I know they aren't the majority, yet, but that's the road devolution is taking us down isn't it? I always used to support the home nations in sport and the like, but as I get older I notice the anti English sentiment from Scotland more and more.

No, it's not the road that devolution is taking us down. Like nydryl (I think) said - A vote for the SNP is not a vote for independence. And devolution is quite a good idea and loosely fits into the big society idea that the Conservatives are championing.

There's always been a massive anti English sentiment when it comes to sport. On the news the other day they were effectively pleading with Scottish fans not to boo the Lichenstein anthem because it's the same tune as God Save The Queen. Ignore sporting events, they mean nothing.

The anti English per se sentiment isn't that strong (though it exists, I can assure you of this first hand). The anti Westminster and especially the anti Conservative sentiment exists very strongly though.

There is no reason for the Union to break up, it won't benefit anyone whereas it will harm everyone in some way or another.

I ask again, why would you vote to remove yourself from Scotland? Or 'get rid' of Scotland, if you prefer?

but as I get older I notice the anti English sentiment from Scotland more and more.

Much more anti-scottish sentiment going about imo. English people don't seem to understand that just because we hope your football team fails miserably, it doesn't mean most of us hate the english as a people. Also, northern ireland gets more funding from the taxpayer so why is it always scotland which gets grief?

The only anti English sentiment I come across is in sport and that should really be ignored. It's no different to me 'hating' Dundee United or a Hibs fan 'hating' Hearts. Of course English people living up here might have different stories to tell but to me it doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

Wouldn't losing Scotland from the general election effectively cost Labour anything from 30 seats upwards and the conservatives virtually none? Surely it would put the conservatives in a far stronger position to win general elections.

Well what I said before editing was true anyway.

Yes, the majority of the map is blue. Funny that, because that's who won the election. If you look at the 2001 election, most of the map will be red because Labour won the election. What exactly is your point? Do you have one? Are you capable of forming one?

Believe me, there is anti-english, and to some extent anti-British sentiment in Scotland. I've experienced it first hand. I can't stand it, and I don't understand it. It's very old fashioned and it needs to move with the times. You tend to find that it's the uneducated view.

What he is saying is that Scotland accounts for a significant number of Labour votes in a general election and the loss of Scotland to the Union would also mean the loss of a significant portion of Labour voters.

I don't think that is enough to guarantee Conservative victories, but it would make it more interesting.

My initial reaction now is to call for independence for England, or at least for England to have the same degree of autonomy that Scotland has. I've had enough of the whole issue, basically.

We trade freely with Eire. We could do the same with Wales and Scotland. We'd all be provinces of the EU anyway.

We are not provinces of the EU.
