The University Thread

What's your first year like? Ours seems to be mainly Globalisation, EU, Political Ideas in Revolution and Conflict.

It's pretty wide open, there seems to be loads of stuff to choose from. IIRC there are a couple of mandatory topics and the rest is up to you, but I've not looked at it for a while.

BTW Politics is one of the biggest feeder courses for the media.

Which is where I want to go :)

Damn you for getting in to Nottingham, they were my initial second choice :( I really, really regret doing no work in year twelve now, I should be going to a much better uni than Lancaster :(

Don't be at all. Lancaster is one of the nicest places in the UK I've been to Uni-wise. Everyone there was really friendly when I was staying in a student house there and there are a lot of cool parks etc. to go to/play footie in.

My choice of Nottingham was a mixture of the amount of options on the course, the fact it's a campus but right next to a relatively big city, is good for gigs and really central in England as I have friends in Manchester, Glasgow and London that I'll want to be visiting a fair bit.

Journalism is definitely the field I'm looking at, although I'm not sure what avenue to go for yet (i.e. TV/radio/newspaper). The BBC graduate program looks interesting.

I love the place, I'm just a little concerned about whether its reputation--not that it's bad, it's just not as good as others--might hamper my career. Ah well.

Same here, but I'm definitely going for print journalism. Interests me more than TV and radio, for some reason.

How dare you. It's the gun crime capital of England. Apparently it's down 72% this year, so we might lose our title to some other pretenders :(

I wouldn't worry too much about uni reputation. It should hopefully be quality of writing that separates the wheat from the chaff. :D

I like the idea of print too, as it has more gravitas these days - but then you're potentially reaching less people. Saying that, Channel 4 News is about the only channel I actually respect any more.

That's what I'm hoping :o I'm trying to build up a portfolio of published stuff (like the stuff I write for this) and hopefully that will sell me better than my degree will.

I'm not really too bothered about reach, really, I just love writing and if I get paid for it then it's a big bonus :)

As for reach, fair enough - loving writing is more important than pay as long as you're not going hungry imo :). I've just written for some stuff before with limited circulation, and after a while you kind of wonder 'Is what I'm writing actually having any effect on anyone?'. That in itself can be a bit demoralising.

I really want to branch out in my writing, all my past experience is in music journalism (a web fanzine, DrownedinSound.com, a local magazine called Alternative Ulster etc.) so I'm hoping to get more experience in different fields at uni - get onto the uni paper/magazine etc.

Hmm, I guess. Still, I think that a national newspaper would have more than enough reach to encourage me, heh.

I'm off to Sheffield University in September to study Chemical Engineering. Got my results over a month ago (did the IB) and I've got an unconditional offer now :)

Well I've done a year of Computer Systems Engineering at bristol but it's a crap course so I'm doing year 1 computer science this year.
