Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

I closed 3 threads and left two open.

One for the reviews/performance discussion, one for the sales/pricing/buying etc.

That doesnt even include the owners threads I have left alone.

So that was what 7 threads taking about vega? oh wait there are already a further 2 that have been closed making 9 in total:D
Good. Was too many threads to follow :)

Loud, hot, power hungry @ 1080 performance - 64 is dead in the water and a complete waste of effort.
It's all a matter of subjectiveness really. It's unlikely to be any louder than my reference 1080s at the same temp due to having a better blower, heat is only relevant if your room isn't ventilated (in which case any card will heat it up given enough time), and power efficiency isn't something everyone cares about. I.E the running cost for a year is still less than the saving compared to a 1080ti.

Personally I plan to AIO cool mine once it arrives then move to water cool it later in the year, as even the launch drivers are giving 1080 beating performance in the stuff I play it was kinda a no brainer.

As a gamer, unless you just really like AMD (or maybe dislike the competition that you settle for them), there doesn't seem to be a valid reason to buy Vega 64 at present.

Before all this came out, the 1080 seemed to be 'the forgotten card', and now it seems like it's he one to get instead of the 64. Weird.

I hope AMD can pull some magic from their driver team, as it REALLY seems like they have been hitting it hard to try and get things delivered.

It's not a complete waste of time, there are plenty of ppl that are running 290/390/480 type card with a freesync screen that decided not to jump on furyx because it wasnt a massive jump in performance to what they had already. Vega64 is twice the performance of those cards and will get better over time like every AMD GPU. It's not great I'll admit that, but it's definitely finally a decent upgrade.

For me loud and hot doesn't come into it as I've a custom loop already and the power I couldn't care less at. What's it going to cost a year, about £150 in electric I expect. I earn more than that in a day

In places the 64 barely seems better than the 56. Very curious to see how it will pan out. From what I can see, that might also be due to lower clocks, not only the reduced cores.

64 simply doesn't seem good value at this point, unless drivers are gonna be doing some magic.
To me this indicates the Vega architecture still has many oft he same bottlenecks that Fiji suffered form which prevented it leveraging the raw performance numbers in real -world games.

Wow what a disappointment at £550 for the basic blower style and £700 for the AIO how can ANYONE defend this product?

It's priced around Gtx 1080 for the basic version and around 1080 Ti for the AIO.

It's over a year since the 1080 came out and it's been 5 months since the Ti has come out. Vega consumes more power than the Ti and offers 1080 performance!!! Honestly I don't see how this is a good product surely you're better off getting the Ti?

The 56 gives 90% of the performance at 80% of the cost, why would you bother?

Anandtech: 'AMD has moved farther away from NVIDIA in the last couple of years. Whereas the Radeon R9 Fury X was almost a win that AMD didn’t get, the RX Vega 64 doesn’t appear to be fighting in the weight class it was even designed for. Instead the power efficiency gap between AMD and NVIDIA has grown since 2015, and apparently by quite a bit.'

It's OK though. Navi will magically compete with Volta.

I think it probably has just hit a memory bandwidth bottleneck - it would be very interesting to see how well Vega56 does if the RAM is only overclocked.

However if it ends up being £400+ due to miners then meh!

Despite all the usual power consumption trolling that goes on in this forum its really not bad at all, pretty good in fact but that doesn't take away from it being a GTX 1070.

Too many people fail to understand the difference between TDP and power consumption.

gdfg.png

Not sure what point you're trying to make as the difference (28W) between the 1080 (180W TDP) and the Vega 56 (210 TDP) looks spot-on. The 1070 looks a little high. Is it a reference board?
Check out some other reviews that run Vega in it various modes to see some very high power consumption figures.

Sad, thats what this is, sad, AMD not being competitive in the GPU space is bad for everyone, even those trolls who are loving this right now will come to hate it in the long run.

I can understand you being upset but you've got a cheek saying that considering the way you acted in the Polaris thread by hyping it beyond reason.
