They did use some of the SWAT gear.
Although personally I wouldn't use all of it either as you wouldn't be able to turn and move as fast or easily and I wouldn't use the helmet as it would block your view partially and you wouldn't be able to hear as well.

There's been lots and lots of gripes mentioned. Including the whole 6 months vanished thing. The irony is, the first 2 seasons must only have spanned a total of 3 months of time for the characters. In that time, I dunno, about a dozen cast members died maybe.
They then go 6 months (unseen), living nomad, don't lose anyone.
Back to season 3... boom first episode, Cya Hershel
Wouldn't they have just been better making Hershel's farm span an extra month or two. Or would that have required forethought? Something I really don't think is applied too much in this show.

When surrounded by the shuffling dead, speed and maneuverability are your greatest assets (besides a katana or a crossbow of course...). Even with SWAT gear, if you get cornered by a few walkers, you're going to end up dead.
I think T-dog has the right idea - leave the armour, take the riot shield.
Watched Ep2 last night and was really surprised. Rick certainly didn't pull any punches when the time came to act!
On a different note, I swear that when she has had the baby, Rick should just dump his wife outside in another of those little exercise yards. Whinging cow hurts my ears every time she opens her mouth.
