The Way It Should Be!

anserw these when they do not even understand whats your name..s

rofl.

I understood perfectly; the irony is in the fact that whilst you believe non-English speaking persons should have more difficulty getting through Customs, your own English in said post was horrendous.

That's not an excuse. In fact that's even worse because it essentially means they've just gone over there and not integrated.

But it's just a "full time" holiday..

If people from outside the UK wanted to come here with all the moneis, buy a house, not work AND not get benifits ;) then thats a differant story, not that anyone would want to im sure lol, but still, its a lot differant when they come to work/sponge

And yet we are talking about speaking english, my grammer and spelling has nothing to do with that, troll somewhere else

Oh yeah, because we English are soooo good at learning other country's languages when we emigrate or stay for a long period of time. We don't set up expat communities or anything, do we

Seriously, stop trying to promote the use of our language, when you're a one-man language-destroyer.

Sorry for not having time to proof read my posts. Maybe i type faster than i should be? who knows, still not the point...

The point is you still understand exactly what im typing, and we are talking about NOT being able to understand people, so you are just trolling, grow up

Look, you're basically trying to set a double standard here and are suggesting that when we emigrate to other countries its all fine and wonderful yet when people immigrate here, it's bad. That's hypocrisy at it's finest and yet another attitude that appears to think that England is the centre of the universe and that we're the only country to get immigrants.

Also, why are you putting the words "work" and "sponge" within the same context?

While it's a nice theory that everyone should speak the language of the country they move to before they go the reality is that not everyone can or will. On occasion while on holiday I've had to rely on the ability of the other party to understand English or my pidgin attempts at French/German/Finnish and gestures to convey my meaning - before anyone queries, the ability to hold a full conversation in Finnish to open a bank account is not something that you will be taught in most foreign language classes.

If you are going to be there for an extended period of time then I'd hope you would make an effort to learn the language but it is your right not to, the main person you are making it difficult for is yourself if you refuse to learn the language.

It must be slow news time already.

If you think about it what else can he do ? employ an interpretor ?

ZOMG, man refuses to speak to someone in a language he cant speak or understand!111. I don't speak to French or Spanish people EVERY day and I'm not on the news. The only point of interest is that he is asking them to leave the shop, which they wont understand anyway because they cant speak English.

Its got nothing to do with someone making a stand and more to do with someone wanting publicity and or the press with nothing better to report.

Well, I just mean the ones that emigrate. I doubt most of the people that leave for places like Dubai bother to learn Arabic which it is hypocritical.
It depends. If you emmigrate to a place where the culture is western based in that is has developed to accomodate westerners, is not learning the native language such a bad thing?

Also it's equally too much of a sweeping generalisation to suggest that there's necessarily a problem with foreigners in this country learning the language. From the immigrants that I've met, pretty much all of them can speak English.
Indeed.

If this is in response to my comments, I only suggested it would be rude not to learn phrases such as 'thank you' and 'hello' :)

I agree.

It was more in relation to the article and the idea that everyone should be able to speak the language of the country they move to, I just decided to try and forestall anyone suggesting that I hadn't made any effort at all when it wasn't something that is particularly plausible to do. I could, and should, have made more of an effort in some cases but I would always try to learn the basics for greetings and simple politeness.

Not really in a place like Dubai where they seem to actively encourage immigration.

I'm the first person to express total apathy about learning a new language but then I don't really care if an Armenian or whoever comes to this country and can't speak any English.

Not at all, im saying that a lot of people that emigrate away from the UK do it as retirement and holiday, not like to work (or as some do, sponge)

What im trying to say is, when people come here to WORK, and earn money, you would think the very first thing to do would be learn some english right?

And i also said i wouldnt go on holiday to say france withought learning a little french.

Yet people sell up everything here, go to say... spain? and live out there life in one long holiday, not working or trying to claim benifits or anything like we get here, im sure there is english people that do so, but it's not on as large of a scale is it?

You should come and do my job for a week.

but then I don't really care if an Armenian or whoever comes to this country and can't speak any English.

That works right up to the point at which you need to interact with them in some professional capacity.

Here's a great idea: let's replace all the 999 operators with people who can't speak English. Fun for all the family!

If I was going to live in a forgien country I would make the effort to learn the language first. Common sense suggests it is a good idea.

Well, until that specific thing happens, I don't think I'll lose any sleep over it.

That's a totally inane analogy.

Talking about 999 operators, what happens if a none english speaking person rings 999? Im guessing they have people that speak multiple languages?
