The Wicker Man

Rubbish.

I'm not even talking about the Nicolas Cage remake, I'm talking the original.

Britt Eklund was insanely hot as a young'un, but not even with her baps out could she save this film, which is just weird for being weird.

I even guessed at it being a Kubrick it was that strange for no reason.

[edit]There was a lass in it that looked exactly like Kim Cattrall when she was OK looking too.

Time and time again you have shown that you have absolutely zero taste. This is just another example of it.

Ringu was awful and Pulp Fiction is awesome :p

You didn't know the Orphanage was a foreign film?

I thought it was pretty average too tbh

Agree on Sweeney Todd, such a terrible film.

Once more, OCUK shows a staggering lack of openmindedness and imagination. I'm sure you'll all enjoy Wall.E and Mamma Mia, those are far more at your level.

The remake was terrible, i was devistated that such a good actor has to star in it. Cage in my opinion isnt suited to this type of roll.

I love it when people accuse others of being closed-minded simply for having a different viewpoint

The problem is that I can explain in detail why I liked the Orphanage or The Wicker Man as much as I can explain why I do not like another film. However there are plenty films I don't really care for but I know they are good films. This is down to taste, but I'm not stupid enough to say a film is rubbish just because I personally don't care for it.

A lot of people slating films on here are not explaining what was wrong with it or how it could have been improved. Are we expected to take comments like "it's not even in blummin English" as a serious criticism to the quality of The Orphanage? It's just embarrasing...

You've quoted me why exactly?

Am I not allowed to dislike Sweeney Todd and The Orphanage? And before you go on about it's the reasons why; I never said I didn't like Sweeney Todd because it was a musical.

Does liking musicals put you on some higher level to the rest of us?

Yes, yes it does. The Blues Brothers is a musical and one of the finest comedies ever written, feel free to disagree but know that before you do you are wrong and I won't hear your mewlings from up in my ivory tower anyway. ;)

I'm afraid to say I haven't yet watched the Wicker Man, one of a great many films that I'd like to watch if I find the time but it comes a long way down the mental list. That's not necessarily because I don't think it will be good but I suspect there are many I'd enjoy more and after all that is normally the main reason I watch a film.

I thought it was pretty average too tbh, but that's nothing to do with the subtitles.

I quite liked the orphanage. best subtitled film I've seen recently was 'Tell No One' fantastic film with some amazing chase scenes. I'd recommend anyone to watch it

Thw Wicker Man is decent IMO doubt I'd ever watch it again though

Tell No One was pretty good, would have liked it more if everything wasn't revealed quite as early though.

I guess in a similar vein to Scarface it had just been talked up far too much and I expected too much of it, when in reality it is nothing more than average.

Average?, it's a fantastic film. It's not all about base enjoyment lol, lots of elements go into making a fantastic film (like the wickerman). Great (rooted - this time in Pagan practice) script, great score (In the woods there grew a treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lol) and great cinematograhy/direction. Wicker man is a classic.

Also Eklund used a bum/bap double for the door dance sceen .

Not sure how she'd have used a bap double when the frontal scenes had her face in them. As described above the rear body double wasn't her, but she didn't know they were even doing the scene like that until she saw the finished product.

I don't understand your base enjoyment comment. If I don't enjoy a film how can I regard it as a fantastic film? The cinematography might have been awesome for it's time, but as I'm viewing it in today's eyes and not misty-eyed reminiscent ones it shows just how patchy it is. The acting left a lot to be desired, the score was woefully inadequate.

It is distinctly average, with nothing but the memory of it's original fans to vouch for it :)

I might be misinterpreting it but I think he means that sometimes media can be more than about just appealing to you purely as entertainment. If I switch to literature for an example - Catch 22, it's a book I don't like much having read it a couple of times now but if I allow that it has an important message* then it can still be a work of genius regardless of the fact I didn't enjoy reading it. The impact that it has on society might be outwith all proportion to the amount who actually enjoy it although I admit that I primarily watch films for enjoyment as I said above.

*As it happens I don't reckon it does, the book is overlong for a simple message but that isn't really the point here.

Never seen it. :p

Gilly - Can I call 'im a philistine please? It isn't a personal attack when it is true, it's an absolute defence in law and everything. :)

All joking aside I'd highly recommend it, the film is just fantastic for the humour, the songs, heck it even has the car chase that was the most expensive in the World for a long time and all for the princely sum of £3 from your local friendly Tesco. In fact if you want I'd even send you my copy to watch and you could return it to me when you are done watching it.
