The Wii U/Nintendo sales and financial data thread

10,000 WiiU's have been sent back to Nintendo from european retailers because they can't sell them, and you think that's heading in the right direction?

Wii U will be discontinued by 2015 at this rate.

Since when has the EU been the "be all and end all" for a global market ? Japan and the US are freaking huge markets compared to the EU.

Also as mentioned sales are increasing in both consoles and software for Nintendo. Oddly enough I have just purchased a WiiU (Zelda bundle) myself. The only reason I held off was lack of games the WiiU is slowly but surely getting better games out for it. With more better games coming out for it more people may possibly buy one (Of course they might not !).

I can't see Nintendo going away anytime soon.

I didn't say Nintendo are going anywhere, just that the Wii U will end up discontinued, I'm well aware that Nintendo made enough money from the Wii to create a few more failures like the Wii U before they get in any trouble.

Sales in Japan are atrocious as well, they sold only 2,598 Wii Us there last week. People are HOPING that some bundles due out will help, however I don't expect anything more than a small boost in sales for a few weeks.

Sales in the US are also abysmal and are way lower than the Gamecube was at this point, which also ended up being discontinued early.

The EU market is similar in size to the US and both are far bigger than Japan - especially the console market. It's probably 45%/40%/15% (US/EU/JP)

Nintendo will need a few system sellers and it doesn't look like they have any in the next ~6 months. Mario/Zelda aren't system sellers, they are games that people buy if they already have the console.

I was slightly off with the time frame, but that doesn't help the fact that they are far from their targets.

If 3D World, Mario Kart and Smash Bros don't turn things around massively then there's no chance of them even doing Gamecube level of sales, let alone anywhere close to Wii sales.

Wii Party U already flopped so they still aren't getting the casual market.

I still can't fathom how they are managing negative shipments in the EU, I knew things were bad, but negative shipments is something else, I could potentially see the console being dropped by more and more retailers to make space for the other 2 next gen systems.

Yeah it doesn't help but was just stating the time frame difference, can give a skewed look.

Well the hope is the Wind Waker Bundle has indeed caught attention, it certainly appears so and should be part of the next Quarter's sales and Mario does look an amazing game, if they ramp up the marketing which seemed to be indicating then hopefully sales will continue to improve.

Wii Party U has been out for a week or something...give it a break :p Although I doubt it'll do wonders...wonders being a massive stretch of course! :)

Hey if it all pans out it wasn't great we know they're financially secure for many a failure plus the Pokemon money has started to roll in again :D

Mario does indeed look great fun. Be interesting to see the figures after the Christmas holiday. If there are £199 offers flying around I think that could tempt a lot of present buying parents.

^^ That's another thing the Wii U can offer, traditional fun games, and a lot of emphasis on local multiplayer. Also once people realize that the Wii U isn't really as far behind the other consoles as some would suggest, because currently people tend to think it isn't next gen, or somehow Xbone and PS4 are so far ahead, but fact is the Xbone is only 720P on most games, people will realize that the specs aren't that bad, and the exclusives games are awesome looking. I think Mario / Donkey Kong / Mario Kart 8 will boost sales massively, to the point that midway into next year the Wii U will be in a entirely different position. After those games launch is the time to judge how well it will sell..

Yup...it's starting to ramp up and will do over the next 6-8 months, need to give it a bit more time, if it doesn't help then they can worry.

Haha that did raise a smile :D

Nintendo should move to be a handheld console maker, which it excels at, and make software for the PS4.

Then I wouldn't have to consider even buying a Nintendo console just to play a handful of first part games. They would do very well out of it I am sure!

Its still early days for the Wii U and Nintendo has over 800 billion yen in the kitty.
I doubt you will see any Nintendo games on other systems for a long long time.

Nintendo still unable to gain any real momentum, sales have collapsed in Japan after only a week.

3DS wowzer doing good numbers. Any Wii U Pokemon games on the cards? New Mario will no doubt give it another bump. Have we got NA figures?

Think we get NA figures next week. I've no doubt that Mario and Christmas will give it a bump, it's just Nintendo needs more than the odd spike in sales every time something major comes out, they need steady and much higher than 10-15k a week sales.

[edit]

It's actually tomorrow for NA figures from October.
