The Witcher - am I missing something?

Absolutely loving it.52 hours played and just started chapter 4 :o.Done all side quests and jobs.Hope i manage to finish it by the 17th.

You should! Savegame will get imported into TW2, even some items! There is one really kick ass armor you can get in last chapter if you explore some crypts, and it is confirmed that one will be possible to import.

Freaking amazing game, everything from combat to story to world design/atmosphere. Only little nitpicks I have are bit annoying dialogue design, when some NPCs stop the dialogue eventhough you still want to talk to them. That is about the only thing I disliked.
On hard the combat is great fun, and with more and more combos quite spectacular. Aard + finishers just awesome.

its a shame people didnt like the combat. For those that didnt what would they have preferred?

a) turnbased combat which would have slowed the entire game down and imo not suited

b) MMO/diablo style combat clicky spam

c) ?

I always thought the diverse combat with good timing rewarded, different fighting styles and two swords (humans/monsters) not even including the signs made the game stand out from the rest!

I think I might fire this up again to get in the mood for number 2, but dam I have Crysis 2, Shift 2 and Just Cause 2 to get through.

Not enough hours in a day :(

I really dont like the Aurura (typo?) engine based RPGs.

I got through about half of the Witcher, but I simply hate the NWN style engine.

I got to the swamps and was progressing reasonably well before I lost my saves (own fault), right now I really have bigger fish to fry but I will get back to this one day..

I got a few chapters in before I got bored tbh. I understand that people here like it, but I didn't understand it myself.

 arc@css, I also lost my saves when I got to the swamp. Also my own fault :p

yep - i even loved the swamps as well (tho some here hated it) amazing depth, detailed and crafted world by cdprojekt - real labour of love.

I've got high hopes for The Witcher 2. I quite liked The Witcher, but never finished it because overall it was too-RPG and not enough fluid action. Too many menial tasks, poor combat and a bit clunky around the edges. I read the synopsis on Wikipedia in the end to get the gist of the story in time for The Witcher 2's release.

I bought the Witcher back in the xmas steam sales, and so far... I'm not sure if I'll want the second one? :p

So far I've gotten to chapter 1 (well, just started it really) and I'm finding the combat a little... clunky. I'll admit, I've started and stopped a few times due to being busy of late, but I'm not 'enjoying it'.

Did anyone else find this but they stuck with it and liked it? Or does the combat improve? I really do want to like it, as it's very much my thing in principal! :D:p

I played Witcher when it first came out and I agree with you, the combat was unique but not that fun and I couldn't stick with it past the first level. I'm still going to give Witcher 2 a bash though :)

I thought it was an epic game sure the combat system was weird at first but I got used to it and it's not bad really, fantastic storyline and I can not wait for the sequel.

Stoner81.

Nobody has said that they got 'stuck'

They've just said that they found the start of the game tedious - which most people have agreed on. I certainly found the start really boring when I played it.

Herp derp.

If they haven't gotten past the tutorial, they certainly got stuck in the boredom that the game might introduce at times, in the beginning.

It was certainly not appealing to start over when I lost my saves once.

If people get bored in an rpg like the Witcher tbh hard to believe they would last 5 minutes in a more hardcore rpg :)

tbh, i have played a lot of rpg's and i found it to be quite boring. (and i pretty much like every game;))
It just all seemed a bit amaturish to me. Clunky dialogue, clunkier combat(though it is actually good once you get used to it i think) boring visuals.
I really did want to like this game, i gave it a good go and gave it the benfit of the doubt at times, but i doubt i will ever finish it tbh. The story is everything to me in a game, and it did not grip me in the slightest.

Saying all that though, i have already pre-ordered the second one, as it does look great.:)

This, 1000x this. The NWN engine can burn in hell :p And I include DA:O in that assessment too.

Not sure I understand. What if we got bored with the mechanics? Because we like more strategic, party-based RPGs?

D&D has plenty of strategy, and I've enjoyed immensely games like BG1 & 2, IWD2, etc. The D&D ruleset is 100x more "hardcore" than the Witcher's, btw.

Witcher was a pretty simple game, with an engine I despise, and mechanics that lacked much in the way of depth, but wasn't as visceral and plain fun as Diablo.

Keep on playing. The opening bit in the castle is dull, and then the story begins with Act 1 in that small countryside town, which is also very dull. From Act 2 onwards the game kicks off though. On my first run through the game, act 1 killed it for me and I quit only to return a few months later after bugfix patches were released. Act 2 and beyond see's the game really open up.

Combat sort of remains samey, they remain based on timed clicks and duck/rolls. You have very little choice of armour & useful weapons too. The magic spells and potions feature of the game I thought was brilliant. That said, the plot and the world truly shine, and it is a somewhat unique RPG.

That's another thing i don't get about this game. I would consider it to be very simple for an rpg as well, and certainly not 'hardcore' in any way. I would actually describe DAO as deeper, more tactical and even more hardcore than the Witcher. And it's not even in the same league as BG or Diablo(which i only recently played on my laptop actually-brilliant:D)

I wonder if people are looking through rose-tinted glasses at this game a bit just because it was a PC exclusive?
