The Witcher-Official Thread

What it is mate is one big plant monster which you get a trophy for when killing it, itself is a quest and the thing creeps up on you all the time in the swamp until you kill it.

ONce you do it once it never comes back and the swamp is pretty easy after that.

I remember when i 1st played it and i seriously thought jesus wept, this is a huge jump in monster strength, and there are loads of them.

You do get little ones after that, but they are nothing really.

Well ive just come across him again, but this time i won:D

To attack: move the cursor over the opponent you want to strike and left click. To do a combo: wait until the sword icon changes to one with flames around it then click again.

Flames? only if you're playing on easy i believe mate...

Wait untill the sward swipe changes colour to do a combo tbh...

/me still awaits the patch before replaying it for the 3rd time.

By the way, the different paths of the story really change if you decide to play on a different side... i believe there are 3 seperate routs you can actually go down to complete this...

Going back to thoes plant creatures in the swamp whats the best way to kill them, is that fire spell any good?

Yes. I chuck all of my level upgrades at this spell, i use it too much. Hide behind something, or just out of range of the plants, charge up the spell, and attack from a distance, a couple of hits will kill them off. When you level up some more, you can just run up to a bunch of them and kill them pretty easily though.

Just completed this, enjoyable game overall although it does have some flaws and I can see how in its original form (i.e. not Enhanced Edition) a lot of people could have been put off. Thoughts below:

+Graphically it looks very good for a game that came out before Crysis
+Good performance
+Combat mechanic is fairly original, feels a bit easy though in terms of timing your strikes and figuring out the best style to use
+Strong storyline
+Some decent characters
+Cutscenes are occasionally excellent
+Quite a lot of depth to the inventory in terms of potion/item types
+Dice Poker is one of the more enjoyable RPG minigames, certainly better than Kazak from KOTOR
+Decent game length, took me over 40 hours

-Conversation triggers could be handled better, it is annoying if you wake somebody to speak to them, then after one conversation arc they go back to bed and you have to wait for the animation to finish and then re-wake them before you can continue talking about a different topic
-Not enough variety of (useful) weapons or blacksmiths who can reforge weapons, often I was playing for hours with no opportunity to attempt a reforge
-Not enough people willing to buy books
-Looting corpses is a bit fiddly, having to wait a while after the kill before you can do so, also would be nice to be able to 'ignore' a corpse if you don't take all items from it (can be frustrating after a big fight going through a dozen bodies trying to remember which you've already looting)
-Too easy to automatically fail missions by progressing others, for example the Armor quest (and a couple of others) in Act 5 I failed because I took a boat back to Vizima rather than running all the way back the way I'd come. Probably my biggest gripe, I got screwed over by this in Chapter 1 as well.
-Doesn't make it clear enough what times NPCs are going to be at a location highlighted on the map, often you can go to places for a mission but they aren't there
-Ridiculous use of allies in the Ice Plains, one guy turned up for literally one fight that lasted about 60s before the game decided I needed to continue without allies
-Lacklustre first chapter (Vizima Outskirts)

I've finally got around to starting this and it's pretty good so far, enjoyable. Just one quick question, Dice Poker. I've read on the witcher wiki that the dice rolls aren't truly random and that's totally killed this mini-game for me. Anyone know of a mod that corrects this?

Well, I've tried, I really have tried to enjoy this game, but this is the dullest adventure I've ever been on. And I was around when Leisure Suit Larry was popular. I'm a few hours into chapter 2 and the experience just seems to get worse.

Playing detective isn't so bad, but running from A to B, back to A, back to B, onto C, back to B, it just feels like a step back in time. The combat I've grown to like, however enemies seem quite unbalanced. I've been chopping away throughout the game with no major problems, then a plant in the swamp hits me four times and the protagonist keels over. I would have changed the difficulty, but I can't do that, it won't let me.

Continuing on that theme, I wanted to change the depth of view as the default is bloody ridiculous. It wouldn't let me. I tried to bind my mouse buttons to actions, it wouldn't let me....hmm.

I tried to see good points in it, gave it chance after chance, but it just kept farting in my face :(.

I wanted to like it after hearing so much great stuff about it, but it won't let me.

Meh

Yeah the plants can be surprisingly tough, basically you need to make sure you aren't engaging them alongside other enemies. They are also quite susceptible to fire (so e.g. igni sign or a torch can be an effective weapon of choice rather than your normal swords).

There is a lot of running back and forth between locations but then that's the same for most modern RPGs I've played including Oblivion, Dragon Age, Fallout 3 etc.

Fine...you get one more chance Witcher. Hard to give up on a game with such good credibility and acclaim.

In I go.

Charge!

The witcher is a strange one. Some parts of the game really dragged, others were fantastic.

My biggest problem with all the running about in this game (in particular the fields towards the end of the game) is that there isn't much to do between the points of travel.

I must say I am starting to enjoy it more as chapter 2 progresses :).

I think one thing I was approaching incorrectly was the combat. Not being afraid to use potions for instance and learning to move around a bit when faced with lumbering slow heavy hitters.

Oh, and that plant that was infuriating me, was Coccacidium . What a pain the ass to the untrained / inexperienced player.

I've just started playing the Enhanced Edition adventures and some of the missions have no audio in the dialogues?

Also, Can someone please tell me what this means in the bottom right hand corner? Is it linked to the audio not working somehow ? It wasnt in the main Witcher game I don't think
