The Witcher-Official Thread

Ouch, just read the review. He seems to have something aginst this game right from the offset!

6/10 Mediocre. With the summary "With the annoying combat, uninteresting characters and messy dialogue, it's probably a good thing that The Witcher lost his memory."

For me the devs behind the Witcher have managed to balance the feel of freedom in the game but with a good story and purpose behind it.

And that has always been the holy grail in single player rpgs (like Gothic, Oblivion etc) A game that gives you the freedom but also give you the story and structure.

Like a single party KOTR but with more freedom and intriguing story as well as a entertaining combat.

For me Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines does the RPG luvliness from a dialogue perspective. The dialogue and options depending on your character were phenomenal and second to none really, but its combat suffered but still a great great game. (after patch!)

But from an action and gameplay perspective The Witcher is the top dog in this genre. They've combined the immediacy and addictiveness in the combat of Diablo, the feel of freedom of Gothic and the engaging story of Bloodlines/KOTR/BG (or even Planescape Torment but that might be pushing it but havent finished the game yet so who knows)

And they did all that with much much less bugs than a lot of the aforementioned titles :)

edit: gonna try playing it on my tv see how it plays :D

I remember the first time I went on Diablo online, it was an amazing feeling. (apart from the guy duping GSOW and massive piles of gold)

Anyway back to the present day. Just had confirmation that The Witcher has been posted :)

I bought vampire masquerade and never even opened the box! I think I might give it a go to see what its like. What patch do you recommend I install? I guess the one with the nude packs I read about?

Cheers

What patch? heh all of them. Well official dev patches then the official community patch. No idea there was a nude patch lol but its been a while since i played it.

Played this game almost non stop over the weekend so having a break from it but I got to say it still amazes me. Its the little details like characters going for cover in rain storms and people not being in the same spot all the time. I had a quest to turn in and the guy was normally at the inn getting drunk but I could never find him in there - instead he was out walking about.

I love the combat system aswell pretty cool animations keeps you right in the action. The sub games are top notch aswell. You really feel scared too when venturing into new areas because some of the monsters out there are damn tough but the sense of progression is still there too so you know if you play it right you can take those bad guys down. :)

Rushed home from work hoping my copy was here, but it wasn't :(

Bring on tomorrow!

Anyone running the game on a x1800xt or 8800gt at high settings 1280/1024? :)

Just wondering how it performs on each card!

*********SPOILER**********
- Near end of chapter 3 -

Anyone else feeling a bit ripped off by the result of the werewolf quest? I wen't to all the trouble of saving the wereworld cos I'm trying to be a righteous witcher, and what did I get for a reward?? Nothing . I guess if you're actually a b*st*rd and kill the werewolf then you get his fur and get to brew that kickass talent potion. But perhaps that's just part of the game; balancing personal gain with whats morally right or wrong.

I was fully expecting these mediocre scores from gaming sites. It fits the logic these days. If its not hyped to hell and accessible to 10 yr olds and too much thinking/challenge is involved then it must be crap....

man the combat is getting to much fun once you stat hitting the 3rd tier talents, some of the combos you string together especially while in the group stance are awesome :D

I have a X1950pro running everything on max at 1280 x 1024 and generally it's fine but it's struggling in the swamp area so i'll need to take it down a notch. The only issue I have is the loading times but you get used to them after a while.

It's great to see so many people going out and buying the game on the basis of this thread. It really deserves to do well, there's obviously so much blood sweat and tears gone into its creation.

Might give publishers who just keep pushing shoot the aliens games with the latest graphics engine a bit of a kick up the rear.

For reference for those asking : 8800gts, 2gb ram, E6400 at 2.6ghz, runs maxed and smooth. Looks sodding amazing :).

It runs and looks amazing on my 2.7gig opteron, 2gig ram and 8800GTS @ 610/1800.

Ive been through Halo 3, ET QW , World in conflict and bioshock and The Witcher is graphically on par or above (in some areas) and just has so much more depth and immersion than these so called GOTY games.

It seems to be doing pretty well even with the lack of marketing etc I think as more and more people get wind of the game it will continue to sell well for quite a while.

Spoilers Spoilers Towards End Of Chap2

Doing the autopsy just now, just wondering are their several people you can find guilty based on the choices you make? I think it's Kalkstein but I could have made a mistake

END SPOILERS

Good question. Wonder what would happen if you didn't examine certain incriminating evidence. I'd imagine the game would guide you back in the right direction somehow, as you can't progress otherwise.
