The Witcher-Official Thread

This game is available for only 17.99 new at a site that sells dvds. Im tempted. but have too many games to play

It is GOTY , better than a lot of crap we've had this year :)

Its his opinion, we're all entitled to our own. I don't think it is GOTY material, for me a GOTY needs to be flawless, and this unfortunately does have its flaws. The load times can be frustrating when trying to figure out what you're doing in a quest if you become confused - just entering a small house can take up to 30 seconds to load, which isn't much but it gets old fast. The combat is a little shallow for me, i prefer much more in depth battle systems in RPGs, but it's still a very good effort.

The only flawless game i can think of that i've played this year is Resi 4 wii edition... but thats a port so that can't count surely... hopefully the rather huge run of games before Christmas will reveal a gem.

Help required already.

I'm near the beggining but I'll hide the question in a different colour incase someone is reading but hasn't started it yet:
***SPOILER***
I've just done the part where Leo gets killed by the professor and I think I have to rest as I can't leave the room as Vesemir keeps talking to me when I try to walk past him, but I can't find a fire to rest infront of.

LOL, I've just figured it out................you have to select the icon while talking to Vesemir, thought there would be more to it than that.

***SPOILER***
I know it's simple and will probably struggle if I can't get past something simple like this, but if I don't find out then I know this game will end up on the shelf untouched like the others as I'm already p****d off.:(

Figured it out but I may aswell leave it incase someone needs it.

Thanks.

When you talk to him there is a button on the bottom left of the screen, press that to meditate. Some NPCs have the ability to let you meditate like house owners and innkeepers, this is one such example.

There is no such thing as a flawless game. Oblivion was 2006 goty apparently...and i'd class Witcher above it.

Yep played resi evil 4 on ps2 and whilst its good its not flawless either....imo :D

You need to use the fire under the cauldron in the kitchen. You might need some flint though :)

Btw, I just thought I'd add a thank you to Surfer for posting the Wiki background link. I ended up ordering a hardback book from Amazon that is a story written before the game. I can't wait for it to arrive :)

Thanks again for getting that link. It has some very interesting reading. I had absolutely no idea that the game was based on books :)

I must have been ingame trying it as you were typing, thanks anyway.:)

Thats the sort of thing I expected i'd have to do.

Its true that someone's GOTY is not going to be someone else's. For me personally it is GOTY, maybe even the last few years.

My reasons being...

Better choices and consequences than I've seen in other rpgs
Amazing storyline/plot twists, the further you progress the more amazing/gripping it becomes
Very unique combat/magic/alchemy system (once you get used to it and understand its logic)
Npcs that aren't all braindead morons.
Art direction is perfect for the world it potrays
Refreshingly adult in nature, not talking about the sex thing.
Fun mini games to add some spice
Cutscenes that immerse you into the story
Not combat heavy like some rpgs (I hate hack n' slash heavy games)
Runs great. Loading screens 5-10 secs max, but I did defrag after install and my rig is high spec, so your mileage may vary on this one.
Great atmosphere and very unique fantasy world from what we've been used to. Sure it has elves and dwarves etc but done in a more compelling and gritty manner than we've seen before. (nicey nice high fantasy has been done to death)

Got my copy and installed it, a few bad points spring to mind, i havent got a stable fps its jumping from anywhere bewteen 5-100fps ingame, ive dropped shadows down to medium but that didnt help ive also encountered a bug was attcking someone and Geralt just kept swinging his sword not touching the bloke and i couldnt move or do anything else and now after doing the 1st part and traveling to viezma? the game crashed, cant same im a happy chappy at the moment :(

If that were the case then the Game Of The Year award would never be handed out, because no game is ever flawless and that's the bottom line. Out of the games we've had this year I'd say this game is probably the best, but I've not played Crysis yet. :D

My nominations for GOTY on PC would be Supreme Commander, The Witcher and Crysis. So it's close.

WTF you sicko! :p :D

Spoiler: And I thought I was sick for running across the swamps about eight times just to lay the green elf chick at the place where the druids are worshipping. :p

It's like being part of a movie, time just flies and you don't feel like you wanna stop, you feel immersed and just flow along regardless of the time.
One big journey that cruises instead of rushing but still keeps you interested.

Damn you! Just read that and thought noooo now i know whats at the end of the witcher! :p

Reading this thread is hard, but good news, looks like my copy has been dispatched! Heres hoping it will arrive tomorrow:D

LOL, sorry m8 wouldnt ever be an idiot like that!

Am still waiting for my copy to arrive, Cant even play it when it arrives as I cant sit up at the computer until I eventually get my back operation on the NHS (walking without terrible pain would also be nice)

Just as a bit of nistolgia my first RPG type game (apart from ali baba and the 40 thiefs on the atari 800) that got me hooked was ultima 3. LOl no one will remember that but am really looking forward to this one

Dkes :)

Just this second killed the beast. OMG!!! how hard was that. The guy earlier saying that he had slotted him with one stun and then special - I don't think so mate.

I think that has to be the hardest boss battle I have done in a while, however I get the feeling that they are not gonna get any easier with this game.

It wouldn't have been so bad except the last time you could save before the battle was just before the cut scene that precedes the beast. Having to click through that cut scene loads was not fun. I must have seen it about 20 times. Why oh why do developers not pick up on these things?!?!?!?!!?

i'm assuming you patched it straight away? Theres a first patch with a lot of fixes in it.

Occasionally i come across instances where when i press attack Geralt doesnt attack he just stands there: and it doesnt look like hes blocking/defending etc. I just dodge out the way and attack from another angle, but yeah at times buggy.

Not sure what would be the cause of huge jumps in fps. I havent made it to Viezma yet (im at end of act1) - and ive been playing for hours lol.. you guys are hardcore heh.

Not sure if im out of act 1, i have just finished what i would call the Tutorial island/castle, i havent played against any bosses unless u count that slavoa? one.
