The Witcher-Official Thread

Finally looked to have resolved the crash issue. So, after installing the latest patch, ensuring I had the hotfix installed, and making sure the latest drivers were all present and correct I simply upped the Virtual Memory to 3gb (as recommended by someone of the official Witcher forum) and hey presto! no more crashes.

Levelling system

Hi, just started the game and am doing the prologue/tutorial chapter. Just got to the first 'level up' and am confused about how the system works... Tried to read the manual but that didn't help. Can anyone explain the system and offer advice on how to spend ability points etc througout the game? Wouldn't want to break my character and have to re-start!

have to go to a campfire and rest, then when the screen goes all grey click on your character icon at top right of screen, then you can upgrade

Thanks for the reply but was wondering what are the best abilities to invest points in early on and how the system workd as a whole i.e. is it possible to max out all the abilities? Is there a level cap?

From what I have understood there are no "best" abilities to level up on. You level up depending on the type of character you play I guess.

As for a level cap. I don't think there is, but if I am right, the manual does say something like not all the silver and gold points are gainable from levelling up, and you need to take potions to release the additional ones.

At the moment I am building up the strength, dexeterity and the other 2 slots, as well as the first 2 levels of the steel swords. I dont have a silver sword yet, which leads me onto my own question, of where can I get one, and what is the earliest chance to get one?

Imo fire is way the best ability to max out. Sure stunning enemies with wind then decapitating them is fun but when the groups get larger and you keep taking damage while performing finishing moves you'll wish you had the instant damage of fire.

Works great for dealing with all the little enemies in the game, just 2 blasts of fire and they are not getting up. So useful when ** runnign through the swamp and you dont want to have to stop and draw your sword.

Combine this with lots of points in intellect and stamina and by the end of the game you can annihilate any single or group of enemies before your endurance bar hits zero.

Of all the sword trees i think group silver, fast silver and fast steel are most useful, but if you complete all of the quests you can easily hit 4 or 5 stars in all of them.

Stunning looking game but please, please, please tell me there is another way of controlling main character in this game than this retarded running sideways and turn with mouse console hybrid. I have enemies surrounding me and my character is just standing there in the middle like idiot with sort up shouting "hua hua" and no amount of clicking or pressing buttons can actually convince him to attack at my will other than following one of the enemies with cursor, like it was minesweeper or something. What am I missing?

Well you need to choose the correct syle. Fast , medium, group. And switch in and out if your not hitting. You can also roll out of trouble or jump over an enemy if they're close.

OTH is the best and once you get used to it it is bloody fantastic.

Why can't it be simple and effective, like in decade old Heretic 2 if they must insist on third person view (why at bizarre RPG angle though).
I don't understand what am I supposed to do to fight - if I keep left button pressed Wolf doesn't do anything, if I keep pressing the button I get crossed sword over the enemy but Wolf attacks anyway. What am I missing?

From what i've seen so far; timing. When you first start and get in to a few scraps clicking the mouse button will start an attack. After a few swings a flame/sword icon appears. Time you mouse click with that and so on.

I think!

I'm not going to play it any further until i get my new 8800GT. Playing on a x800xl is no fun at all.

Yep

You click once to start the attack then time your subsequent clicks when your cursor changes into a flame/sword

It is a major failing of the game IMO - I much prefer a first person view with interactive combat like Oblivion personally but it is a good game nonetheless

Yeah, I think the fighting is pretty good. It's just a matter of timing. And at the end of the day you're still clicking a mouse button. With The Witcher you get to watch some pretty cool moves, plus the finishing moves are impressive too.

Picking the correct fighting style for the situation is important. I love being surrounded, switching to the group style attack, swinging my sword around and watching the heads literally roll.

So, how do I do it - I switch x or z, and follow the enemy with my cursor until i see flaming sword? How do you guys control your camera when the same mouse that you have to point at your enemies also controls rotation and only at very edges of the screen? I really want to like this game but this interface is just soooo frustrating.

You get used to it. It's quite intuitive after a while.

You just want the normal sword icon over an enemy first, then click to attack, when the attack begins get ready for the flaming sword (of death!) and click again. I'm still very early in the game.

the other signals for timing the clicks are in the animation of the swing after the final blow, the tracer colour changes and you'll here a unique woosh sound as well.

i've only just noticed it because i've been so focused on the flaming cursor :D

If you know the combination then u can click just before the 'fire sword' and still continue the attack sequence, also use the Q,E,R buttons to switch between your weapons Q= steel sword E= silver sword R= other weapon you have also can be used to change stance while weapon is drawing instead of z,x,c
