Hello people.

I liked Oblivion, played it for a bit and I felt that it got kind of dull on me. I think it's because I completed the main quest at a low level and didn't use the user created addons.... But that's beside the point.

The Witcher has caught my eye, it's strook me as something very similar to Oblivion but it looks a little more refreshing.

What can I expect in this game? Are there a lot of quests? What's the combat system like? Does it have a good crafting/creating system?

Is the game offline only?

I liked the Oblivion combat system, it felt like that you were in total control all of the time.

Is this a hungry game? How would it run on my rig : E4600 @ Stock, 2GB Ram, HD3870.

Any advice/information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Its nothing like oblivion, it is offline only, the combat system is great, you get 3 styles, heavy, group and fast, you have to choose depending on your oponents and to get combos you have to time your clicks when in combat but the animations are stunning and the animations change when you level up and get more attibutes.

before you start the game you can choose 3 difficulty settings (easy, medium, hard), its quite basic, easy doesnt require alchemy, medium requires alchemy in some parts, hard means you have to be topped up for most battles.

their are main quests and side quests, have not really done the side quests only done main quests. but the main quests are good, the travelling is a bit tedious sometimes but you get over that as you can fight monsters o your way around.

also the game will run fine on your system as long as you have the latest drivers and patches. the game can go choppy at times but its not that bad and doesnt really happen that often.

i would really recommend it, one of the best RPG games out for the PC. saying that i didnt like oblivion but im sure a lot of people will vouch for this game.

Thanks for your reply - Very helpful. :)

Looks like I'm going to be getting this game. I'm happy that it isn't online as I don't want to be addicted to another MMO. :D

No Problem, if theirs anything else i can help you with (Witcher wise) then ask, i have not completed it yet as i have had coursework and other games to bide my time but from the time i do play it i love it!

it takes me over a year to complete games. its taken me 4 years to complete Half life 1 which i completed yesterday.

Personally its not that good, story is drab, combat is click, click again for new move and wait click again for another new move.

The story seems a little weak also, got up to the swamp part, where these giant worms just owned me, so i gave up.

All in all, i would avoid it.

One of the buggiest games I have er 'played'. Played referring to the fact that I have yet to get past the first act because it crashes to desktop on two of my machines every 5 minutes or whenever I go into the map/inventory etc. I've yet to install it on my new dell laptop, so I hope for once that goes Ok. Yes, latest patch/drivers etc.

Combat is dull and about as exciting as watching paint dry. Half the time I hadn't a clue what was going on because its kinda finicky. Oh and you can't even jump...great, so I'll just walk right around this fenced area then...

On the plus side the quests/plotline look great, and the game overall looks very promising. A mate of mine in the thread above said that performance was poor on his rig, and I fell into the same area. On a 3.7ghz dual core with a 7900GTX I had endless stuttering in cutscenes, and frame rate drops in the game, the latter of which was surprising yet loads/saves were quite nippy.

A half decent title from a new dev outfit - polish I believe? Not a patch on Oblivion imo, and even though that got repetitive fast, the freedom did it for me.

Its good but very flawed. Some of the stuff Kainz mentioned is bang on, in particular not being able to go over a fence so you have to walk for several minutes on the path.

When people say things like that it makes me wonder if were playing the same game.

I suppose it depends on what you consider makes a game great. I loved the graphics - grimy, atmospheric, and really smooth.

I like when a game doesn't disappoint when you try something out of the ordinary - it shows the programmers have thought long and hard about every action a player might take.

I hate, HATE, when a game patronises me. Take NWN2 - within the first half hour, you're a mysterious orphan off to collect a mysterious artefact with a dwarf who loves to brawl and a whiny girl thief. It couldn't be any more cliched if it tried.

In the witcher, I'd slaughtered half a village, taken any amount of weird drugs, and had sex half a dozen times before the first act was over. Excellent stuff. My actions all have real consequences, nothing is clear cut good / evil, and you often don't see the results of your choices until much later in the game.

The music is fantastic, perfectly matched to the mood. The fighting, once you get your head around it, is a damn sight better than for most rpgs. And the character development tree and branching storylines make sure I'm going to play it through more than once.

It seemed to be quite prone to crashing at release, and the load times before they were fixed were atrocious, but otherwise it really is head and shoulders above the usual rubbish we're force fed these days.

I do agree about the music. Even though I haven't passed Act1 yet, it is really well done. It's just a shame the bugger is so buggy. I just kept comparing to Oblivion when I played it, and doing that really made Witcher look poor. I think I'll try it on my dell lappy tonight and see how it goes. The whole no holds barred attitude that the game undertakes is good too, as too many RPG's are 'correct' to not offend the gamer. This game just doesn't care - which is why I purchased it after playing the demo.

Whats the missions like is it all combat or is there non combat stuff to do. How many missions are there, is it like gta style missions or oblivion missions? Do you have to use a sword is there no magic like fireballs etc to use?

Hmm demo is 2gb er xxxx that lol i aint even got 2gb space left these days. :P

Thanks for all the replys.

I've decided to test out the demo before I get the full game just to be sure that I like it.

So far it's good. I'm still getting used to the camera angles etc but I like how the combat system works.

I'm not too happy performance wise... To get a decent FPS I have to set view distance to average. :(

For me The Witcher is game of 2007, put simply. Never had any technical problems of note with it either.

Its completely different to Oblivion in many respects. Depends what you want - a sandbox/do what the hell you like game, with no compelling storyline attached (Oblivion), or a deep story-driven RPG with a lot of significant plot twists and consequences, and with just enough freedom to not feel overly restricted (The Witcher). Some people like both types of games, some don't....

I don't usually like RPG games as I just lose interest quickly but the Witcher kept me going. I had lots of problems with the game randomly crashing though. Even so, well worth it.
