Once again, the notorious all-nighter is about to begin for students all around the country.

I've stocked up on Pro plus, got a pack of lucozade tablets, pack of maryland cookies and a stash of redbull.

Anyone else joining me?

This thread is open for anyone working the night away to drop in and share some motivation or for a quick break during your work!

Subject for tonights all nighter is...

Personal Research Project for my dissertation. - about 3000 words in total, got about 500 done so far.

"A study into how reliable the forensic analysis and comparison of fibre evidence can be when used in criminal convictions."

Kris.

Well for my uni tomorrow is the first day back after easter hols, bit later than most people.

A fair few of us have proposal hand-in's tomorrow.

It's not a dissertation, just a proposal - 3,000 words.

Good luck everyone! I've not got a disso but i've got 7 exams to revise for before next Tuesday!

Do I regret partying and missing the odd important lecture on stable fluid equilibrium? Hell no! :D

I know how you feel.

I've got a law lecture in a few weeks, not really been to all of the lectures so it should be interesting.

Well I have to write my introduction, preliminary aims & objectives, literature review, adjusted aims and objectives, methodology.

Then my appendices, MS Project timetable, costs, risks, ethics.

At least the topic interests me slightly, shouldn't be too boring.

I could do it without the caffeine, but I start to lose motivation fairly rapidly if I feel tired in the slightest.

Argh, stabbing tingling pain going from my elbow to my little finger. Every couple of minutes!

Fingers crossed I pass out in a few minutes time, extension... oh yeaaaaah. :p

I havent really looked at them to be honest. I know one is multimedia, but that's about it!

I need to get them done, then i can finish the course. I'm at the end of my 2 year BTEC Computing :p

It's funny how you're in the same boat as me ;)

Have fun, at least you have until 3.30pm.

sod it i'm going to bed. knocked out a good set of 4k words. There's much to be done but pah! nothing of any quality will be produced now.

Night all! :)

Night, I'm jealous.

11 hours till my deadline, hopefully finish by 9am/10am though - get a breakfast at the student bar.

Don't do it dood! I did that once and found myself waking up at like 3pm, way past the deadline D: Plus i missed all the lectures and lab sessions that day.

Me = worlds heaviest sleeper.

***

I did this once, set an alarm which I slept through and woke up several hours later - leaving me completely behind schedule.

Can I be an honary member of this thread please? My dissertation deadline is today at noon, but I handed it in last Thursday... :)

What I should be doing is revision by my body clock is so messed up that ive decided today is a right off up till about 5pm, when i will go to the library and stay there till midnight.

So, im in, where has this thread been?

I'm still here. Still going strong. Slightly ahead of schedule too! :D

Should finish smack bang on time - just before my hand in.

Quick question to like-minded university types....

My proposal for my dissertation is to include a literature review.

I've found though, that all of my literature has addressed my problem question, and none of it has given a mixed view.

My question is on how reliable forensic fibre evidence is, and all of the reviews have confirmed that it is reliable.

I've noticed something though, all of these tests concentrate on different types of clothing and how they are all distinguishable from each others fibres.

I'm interested to know how the fibres compare from 3 of the same t-shirt from H&M or topman, after separate washes / diff types of detergent and conditioner.

Would I be able to pose a sort of problem question after my lit review?

Yes, theres no reason why you cant do a literature review and then say "but, i feel this needs to be done" etc etc. There no reason why you cant investigate what you think is a problem area too.

Thanks for that. I was just worried that now my dissertation subject has already been answered by my lit review that I'd probably need to adjust my topic to something more specific.

Going from the current one:

A study into how reliable the forensic analysis and comparison of fibre evidence can be when used in criminal convictions.

To maybe something like:

A study into the distinguishability of fibres obtained from mass produced items of clothing subjected to individual conditions, when analysed using forensic techniques.

As long as you document changes to your subject then its fine. My final dissertaton was nothing like what I set out to do last year. It was documented through a progress report and refelctive evaluation detailing it. I didnt have a lit review, but I suppose you can put in that the change in your direction.

Dont be afraid to take on something new. Its actually quite common for final year students to produce stuff of publication quality. If you pose a very real and unanswered question and discuss it in an interesting way the examiners will be far more impressed than a perfectly written but age old argument they have read 5000 times before.

Cheers for that, I think I'll be suggesting that I may change the title in this proposal. It should make it a bit easier / more interesting investigating something new. It's a bit boring seeing every paper confirm the answer to my question.

Am i right in thinking this is looking at say samples from a murder suspect shirt, and seeing if this could narrow it down to him, or just everyone who bought a shirt from that mass produced batch? If so it would make a very interesting read. Im no forensic expert, but i am a CSI buff and its the science i find interesting. I wish you well.

Yeah, I'm thinking of studying the same item of clothing e.g. a brown t-shirt. There may have been 500 to each batch made. It's likely that each batch will be slightly different from each other, but I'm interested in looking at items from the same batch.

I'll then look at whether or not there is any significant difference between 10 of the same t-shirt, all washed a varying amount of times, at a varying temperature, with a varying conditioner/detergent. I may even give the 10 t-shirts to friends to wear for a time period, and let them decide how many times to wash them.

I'll then gather back in the items of clothing, making sure not to contaminate them with each other.

Then I'll look at carrying out various types of analysis to see whether they are distinguishable from each other or not.

130 pages. 105 pages of screenies, so the actual work was only 25 pages. Madness that how when you look at someones dissertation and it is well thick but then you realise that only a quarter of it is the actual written dissertation and the rest is the appendix lol.

mines just ticked over 25 pages, thats including front cover, abstract, appendix and references, still need a contents page, write my conclusions, tidy up discussion and other areas.

Whats the subject, if ya don't mind me asking?
