I'm convinced that people who do this sort of thing must get some sort of kick out of others grovelling to them for forgiveness. If LNER had just told him to suck it up they'd have faced advertiser boycotts and cancellation, such is the world today where a tiny minority claiming to be oppressed wield extraordinary power over those in the majority who are the actual oppressed.
