The Worst Official Controller

I wish i could say that.

What sort of hands do you have?

On the ps pad your left thumb is in the same position as your right, so i dont really see how its a problem? Enless we were all born with dodgy left thumbs then it would be understandable why some people cant grasp using the pad.

The majority of the time peoples right thumb is on the face buttons, not on the joystick, however the left thumb is always on the left thumbstick, which is why it becomes uncomfortable. The PS pad was brilliant when the majority/all games used the d-pad and face buttons, but as most games now don't, it makes sense to swap the joystick into the more natural position.

There's a reason why people have said the PS pad sucks for FPS games for many years (long before the Xbox360).

They are at the end of my arms, just after the wrist, and they have four fingers on each and both have a thumb too... such a strange question really as I thought we all had hands which are of a similar design

But for FPS games your thumbs are on both analogue sticks and not the face buttons, so that doesn't make sense!!!

And the sticks are in a more uncomfortable position on the PS pads, so having both thumbs in a more uncomfortable region (in comparison to face buttons and d-pad) is daft. The primary movement method should be in a more comfortable position surely?

Dunno about worst - Dreamcast was pretty uncomfortable, seemed to have lots of hard edges which made protracted play a bit wearing - but analog positioning good with analog triggers too - ahead of its time a bit :)

N64 - didn't really play it enough to comment but seemed decent enough, albeit a bit odd :p

PS1/2/3 - analog bits virtually useless in my experience, crap for FPS, crap for driving games. D-pad is great though and the 4 triggers is a good design.

Xbox - original fitted my hands nicely. Good analog stick positions. Poor D-pad and white & black buttons rendered almost useless due to positioning which made quite a few games (i.e. Tony Hawk) difficult to play. S-type much the same, still difficult positioning of white/black buttons.

X360 - By far the best IMO, analogs perfect, analog triggers and bumpers excellent, buttons comfortable etc. Only one thing and that is D-pad could be better. Otherwise a perfect controller :)

Well they are comfortable for me, but I kind of see what you are saying. If the 360 swapped the position of the buttons with the right analogue stick then do you think this would be optimum for FPS games? It's the fact that the analogue sticks are staggered that I really don't like about the 360 controller, it just feels wrong to me - I like them symmetrical like on the PS pad.

I should probably have said that I meant the Dual shock controller in particular (although the DS3 is an enormous step back even from the DS1 with its pathetic triggers) when I said the PS1 pad.

Yeah, that's it. If the right stick was where a,b,x and y were then it would be awesome for FPS games. But as face buttons are used for all other games (as well as FPS games) it would be a mistake to move the face buttons for a stick as, bar FPS games, face buttons are used more in games.

A seperate FPS controller would be interesting. I think the staggered joysticks is the best alternative though.

From the new controllers it has to be the sixaxis from sony for me.
Cheap plastic light junk with silly triggers it's an embarisment to the rest of the console.

But the DS3 is much better build quality and works with flipper thingy bobs added. :D

I hate the ps3 controller with a passion, I get cramp all the time while using it and I cant be very precise with the analogue stick and the trigger buttons. I like my driving games and i just get frustrated while using a ps controller.

If i could use a 360 controller on a ps3, id be in heaven :p

In my experience of the many consoles i own and have played over the years, the worst controller has to be for the Colecovision. It's big, clumsy, awkward to use and just plain BAD.

Would be good if they made controllers where you could swap the analogue and d-pad/button positions. Then everyone would be happy.

I've always thought about that, i mean, people are willing to shell out up to £140 for a controller designed for racing games (steering wheel), i would happily fork out £30 for a pad designed specifically for FPS games.

lol how much were the controllers? do you reckon you have spent more than me when i bought my wii? if i was to add all my contollers up i reckon ive spent somewhere near £1000 easily,

3 x 360 controllers
2 x ps3
4 x wii mote
4 x nunchuck
2 classic controllers
6 x ps2 controllers
6 x ps1 controllers
360 flight stick
ps2 steering wheel and pedals
mini keyboard
2 x bluetooth headsets (ps3)
3 x 360 headsets
3 x xbox headsets
2 x megadrive controllers
2 x master system controllers
ps1 multi tap
ps2 multi tap
countless number of memory cards for ps1 and about 3 for ps2, thank god consoles come with hard drives now, but i do have 3 sd cards for my wii for sume reason you couldnt buy wii play from gamestation at christmas without buying a memory card too

do you reckon nintendo designed their controller system not to work together properly on purpose so people would spend more on contollers? or did they just make it up as they went along and hope that nobody noticed they were raking it in

Jees, I'd hate to think really.

It's probably worse when you think how much you've spent on games when they're all £30-£40 a pop.

2x Wii-Motes
1x Nunchuck
1x Classic Wii Controller
2x 360 Wireless
1x Multitap PS2
6x PS2 Controllers
4x PS1 Controllers
1x Multitap PS1
4x N64 Controllers
10x Megadrive Controllers
4x SNES Controllers
2x NES Controllers

Then you've got Amiga joypads/joysticks, a fair few PC gamepads over the years, a Logitech MOMO steering wheel.

Not sure if I'm missing any others out, can't remember :o

there has been a lot of hate for the playstation controller, which is surprising, i think its good, although i must say the lack of rumble, when the ps3 was launched and the lack of being able to change batteries, does give it a major handicap, i can also say that sony can sometimes churn out poor components, like for instance when the original "fat" silver ps2 was releasedthe silver controllers had very poor buttons on them and i broke the r1 on both the silver controllers within a month of playing socom online, the only real gripes i have with sony's controllers are that the ps3 versions felt cheaply made and they had no rumble, rumble is a major thing for console gaming, it adds realism, so it does mark the controller down but i would never say its the worst, im just very displeased with nintendo's current system they should have put more thought in before implementing it
