Ok guys, i've noticed some of you schmucks have now got your greasy, grimy, grubby mitts on one of these beauties... and am seriously contemplating selling my E6600's and getting one. No, I probably don't need one, but then again SupCom DOES make use of them, and er... that's about it really.

So gents if you could please use this thread to post your overclock, temps, components, screenies, tips and tricks... anything really that muggins like me will find useful as eye-candy while preparing to get hands on one then it'd be much appreciated. :D

Hi,

I am in the process of selling my E6600 to make way for a X3220 again not that i need one i just want one :)

So i will also be interested to see how these babies perform!

I was under the impression that these were optimised for server performance and not gaming. That a quad core conroe would perform better clock for clock in a desktop function?

No of course not, they perform exactly the same clock for clock. The only difference is that the Xeons are designed for a server environment (ie: to be on 24/7) so are made form higher grade silicon. It's no different to the AMD64 Opteron scenario.

i'd like to know how these run with a decent air cooler..... maybe replacement for my E6400 when the time comes (and the prices drop).

3ghz+ on the 3210 on air would be a dream.....

im getting 3.5 on my C2D E6400, so 15% less clock speed for 2 more cores seems a sexy trade off.....

Got mine up and running.
Just playing about at the moment.
Played a big game of supcom last night, ran as smooth with the xeon at stock (2.13) as the game would have on my e6600 at 3GHz. Happy with that.

3dmark06 at stock speed I was about 800 points short of my e6600 clocked at 3.4GHz (was only bench stable that high)

Just upped the xeons to 2.8GHz, and with my 8800gts at 630:2020 I just got 11084. Cpu score of 4102.
Thats with no tweaks to run it smoother, high graphics settings in drivers etc.

I'm aiming for 3GHz stable, but I think I may be struggling on air cooling whilst keeping it quiet!

just noticed this thread.

Got mine installed very quickly lastnight, so no real chance to muck about with it. But running at 3.04ghz using 1.32v but these do run very hot.

Will get more info tonite if i can and test it more as long as i dont get called out :(

mines not a xeon, just a qx6700 stock 2.66, got it o/ced to 3.2ghz using multiplier of 12 instead of stock 10 (extreme editions are unlocked) i changed nothing else, everything else is stock so the overclock was as simple as it gets....

its super stable as i use it for rendering and its busy most of the time (24 hours a day mostly)... it doesn't get much rest!

air cooled with a noctua with dual 120mm fans, all fans in the case are operating at reduced speed as are the 2 120mm on the cpu cooler so the machine is virtually inaudible..

cheers

More info dude! Want a full report of temps etc. :)

pinkfloyd - my temps are very acceptable... with an old zalman cpns7700 i had load temps of 75degs plus @3.2ghz.. with the noctua installed with its 2 fans running full (quite quiet) it knocked a whopping 20degs off so the vcore was running 55degs, i have now turned all the fans in the case down to low rpm including the 2 cpu coolers so the machine is virtually inaudible, and the temps sit under ful load at 62degs

idle cpu temps are about 26 to 28 degs...

i will post again once i've moved the machine into the ventilated cupboard and seen how much the temps drop (the cupboard i have draws air in from below the floor boards... (3x120mm low rpm akasa fans, and 2x120mm exhaust up and out the ceiling).

Nice....
Think I need to invest in a better cooler. My zalman 9500 doesn't seem to be cutting it :/
Sure I'm applying it correctly, maybe I'm using to much AS5 :p

Few things to try I guess.

same here mate,

not sure what to do with my cooling situation, im thinking maybe too much as5, maybe i should lap it, it did have a slight bulge in the middle.

ahh well still loving it
