Hi am wondering which one is the best one to go for was planning on trying to run 4tb Seagate NAS drives or Red WD drives.

One that ideally supports all p2p methods ie Emule, Torrent, Newsgroups etc

Am looking at the Thecus I like the fact one can plug a tv to it via hdmi port and use it as a pc media player... was looking at the 5550 model with 5 bays, but the Synology Nas drives like the DS413J 4 bay box.

Anyone got any opinions or suggestions on which one to go for ? Or is it best to build your own box?!

I'm currently using an ASUSTOR AS-302T, fantastic unit. Has xbmc built in with HDMI out and one of the new dual core atoms with hardware transcoding for multiple movies streams etc. ASUSTOR are as the name suggests part of Asus. Fantastic units. My review is almost complete, I'll post up when done

I'm not in a position to compare them as to which is better but you certainly can't go wrong buying a Synology NAS anyhow.

No the Synology ones are great, and their software very mature with a brilliant range of apps.

The Asustor ones are very good but they are a grower in so much as being a relative newcomer to market they don't have the widest range of mobile apps, but nas apps are there. Also the AS-302T I mentioned is roughly £250 - fantastic spec for the price.

Qnap also very good.

thanks checked those Asustor units and they do look very nice, but the thecus seems to be the one with more support and apps and supports all p2p types + 5 bays.... while its around £380 mark I feel it would be a future proof thing, especially if using 4tb Seagate nas drives!

Also has a lovely line in option in case you have any other a/v devices you want to listen through with, am leaning on that one, but I do note the Asus has better design with usb 3.0 on front and usable and one on back and is a better design and more efficient.

Welshdragon:

What are your favorite choice of hdds to use in NAS boxes? I was leaning on those 24/7 nas seagate 4tb drives, seem to be the only ones with a good price/ratio on the 4tbs.

Then again there are some hitachi 4tbs for £115 going but I gather they would fail quickly if there on 24/7!

It sounds like you want to put place in your living room to hook up directly to your TV so you may also want to think about the sound output of any NAS/ Storage unit. I know Synology and QNap both tend to be very quiet and I assume Thecus will be the same. The WD Red drives you're looking at are also designed to be quiet so good choice there.

Hitachi hard drives are pretty bullet proof.

I've had 12 2TB ones running for a good 3-4 years 24/7 without a single failure. Also have 16 4TB ones running for at least 1-2 years also without issue.

I hear the new Seagate 4TB drives are also supposed to be pretty good.

I currently use WD Red's. Cool, quiet and fast. Buying again today I'd probably either go for them or the Seagate drives designed for nas units. Although as others have mentioned there are many compatible ones but they suite the purpose and my needs best. Just make sure whichever you get you check the compatibility list for the nas, that way you know they are tested and are compatible.

Just to add i got a pair of 2tb WD RED drives yesterday to replace a pair of failing seagate 1.5tb hds that i had running in my Synology NAS unit. They seem to be very quiet, much more than the seagates i had and they run much cooler as well.

My seagates were idling at 45c and full pelt 60c-ish whereas the red drives now idle at 35c and go up to 45c when being used.

Mind you the seagate hd's i had were 7200rpm drives and werent NAS drives so i suppose that had something to do with the heat it was causing.

Thanks saw the review on the new WD 4tb reds, it would be nice to go for those drives since there the top of the top, however those nas seagates are cheaper....

I doubt one could go wrong with either choice frankly.

Was about to suggest the same thing sounds like they were those old fast and hot drives, id wager these seagate nas drives run cool and well.

Those hitachi 4tbs 5900 drives in those enclosures @ 115 quid are also mighty tempting!
