How do I install them?

I was looking at a theme called Shiftie Black on Deviant Art and its a .gz file. I extract it and it's a tar file. I don't have permissions to move the folders to the theme directory in Ubuntu

I can't seem to do anything with it. And I can't find anything to explain how to do it.

Ugh

Little help.. please lol

"Shiftie_Black.tar" does not appear to be a valid theme

:(

from what i recall i think in the tar file is another .tar.gz file.

If not, then extract to the desktop, open nautilis, click view, show hidden files, open the .themes folder and then just drag the extracted folder in there.

Then apply it through appearence.

If I remember correctly, you drag the .tar.gz file into the window.

It isn't a .tar.gz. It's a .gz with a .tar inside it.

Gah this sucks it looks really nice. I'm trying to customize this install and make it look sweet but I'm finding this more complicated than it probably is.

That's what a tar.gz is (also seen as .tgz). It's a tar file, which is just a collection of files, then gzipped, which compresses it. Can you post a screenshot of the error you get when you try and drag the tar.gz onto the themes window? Have you tried clicking the "install" button and selecting the tgz from there?

By far the easiest way.

I had a quick play with the theme and it installs ok for me but it doesn't seem to work correctly with everything. If you want a nice dark theme Wii-Black is nice.

Try it with sudo nautilus. Are you dragging it into the .themes folder in your home directory? Not sure why you wouldn't have permissions for that, very odd.

This is why I hate googling for linux stuff.

You are correct, I wasn't dragging it into the hidden folder in my home directory. Instead I was trying to drag it into the main theme folder.

Kinda got it working now. My ATI card doesn't get on well with anything so I have to remember to refresh stuff like Emerald. Turn off compiz if I want to watch videos. Gah.

Anyway going to have a play around with it this weekend and see if I can create my own theme. Thanks for your help people.

Really enjoying learning about linux. Still slightly put off with using the terminal when there could be GUI alternatives (auto mounting hdds for instance).

Still gutted about my graphics card. If I use compiz it means I can't watch videos, screen saver etc. If I bought a new rig with a new ATI card would that work better? Is 64bit more stable with newer chips as well? Seeing as I can't get the 64bit version to work on my rig.

Also one last question. I notice that when things are made smallers (images, videos) they are not sharp. If I play a video, make the window smaller its not smooth, it's all jaggy. I use a plugin in firefox called tab scope which gives vista like thumbnails of the website when you hover over a tab. In Ubuntu its not really usable.

I know these are not theme questions but it's my thread and there are not many linux users here damnit lol

Hummm whats the spec of your current pc?? (such a simple question but it probably will reveal a little bit). 64 bit isnt really much better than 32bit linux (depressingly) unless you have a massive 16gig of ram style system (and even then 32bit linux can address lots of ram fine as its not windows...). A newer ati card probably wont solve the issues your having (yet, there will be some new open source drivers out at some point) and the best thing to do is really get a Nvidia card (i know this isnt an option for some but their linux driver is just better)

AMD 3500+
1GB ram
MSI K8 Neo 2 plat mobo
ATI X800 XT PE

Really thinking about buying a new rig or laptop once I pay off debts. This rig is so old now and it's a noisy thing. I think I have said this about 3 times in the past 2 years but it's so tempting and I just don't have the cash!
