Then / Now / Who Knows!!

1) Has your life turned out how you expected?
So far, yes. Still at school yet so there hasn't been much opportunity for unexpected changes to happen.

2) Are you pleased that it's turned out this way?
Definitely. Really enjoying school at the moment... And sailing for county makes me happy as well.

3) Where do you see yourself in 5 more years?
Just graduated from Uni (Won't say which one lest I curse myself - still have to get an offer first!), hopefully in a - dare I say it - high-paying City job.

1) Has your life turned out how you expected?
Certainly not. Five years ago I left school to study at A-Level, entirely different to my current choice. Initally pursuing a career in computer science, I chose to drop out and start again, deciding to try and 'rush' through a new found interest in chem/bio. I'm now studying for an Msc. in Pharmacology and Neuroscience. A far cry from Computer Science, bar the maths involved!

2) Are you pleased that it's turned out this way?
Absolutely. I have no idea why I never chose to study Biology/Chemistry my first time round at A-Level. To go back, complete those A-Levels in a year and go onto studying Pharm/Neuro was the best thing I ever did.

3) Where do you see yourself in 5 more years?
Winning some kind of award for having isolated and cured many life threatening diseases. Realistically? Working in research, either Cancer Research, or possibly some other laboratory somewhere developing and/or testing newly developed drugs. Another avenue I'm considering venturing down is the possibility of studying another degree or going into medicine.

Nope, although I was never sure how it would turn out. I started work straight from school as a graphic designer, which I did for about 9 years. I then got fed up with that and the company I worked for went out of business anyway. I took the chance to go travelling with my mates for about 3 months and came back thinking it would be a new me and a fresh start. It didn't work out like that. I ended up either bumming around or taking awful jobs for a few months at a time. I was living with my parents, had no money (blew all my savings on the trip), no girlfriend and not much of a life. To make matters worse I was slowly getting into playing poker and losing money I didn't even have, although we're not talking thousands or anything. I was pretty low and couldn't see where the hell my life was going.

Then I got an e-mail from some girl. She had found my profile on a free dating site that I had signed up to a couple of months earlier. It was a rubbish site and I never went back to it after first signing up, and it was the one and only dating site I ever tried. I almost deleted the e-mail as I thought it was just spam at first, but fortunately something told me to unselect it and have a look. Turned out to be from an American girl who was studying at Warwick Uni, just a few miles away from me. We exchanged a few e-mails and seemed to be on the same wavelength. After about one week of e-mailing she suggested we meet. I was very unsure as it all seemed very sudden....but figured "what the hell have I got to lose?".

So, we met up about 2 weeks after the first e-mail. We clicked instantly. Not only was she tall, gorgeous, ridiculously intelligent and American, she was also a giant nerd like me. I couldn't believe my luck! I pretty much moved into her all-girls dorm a few days later (good times...) and then she dropped out of school a couple of months later and we got our own place together. Six months to the day after the first date we got married. We lived in the UK for another 18 months before deciding to move to her hometown of Madison, USA. We spent about 3 months in Limbo waiting for my visa to be sorted. Then I was here....thinking "whoa - what the hell happened to me?!"

2)Are you pleased that it's turned out this way?

Well, duh! :p My life is totally different now. We have our own place, which we love. I have a job that I like, although I'm currently looking for something else as I'm not getting many hours right now. My wife has gone back to Uni to finish her degree and is doing really well. We actually have savings in the bank. I'm thinking of maybe going to technical college later this year. We have options and a good future to look forward to, I hope.

3)Where do you see yourself in 5 more years?

Hopefully, we'll both have good jobs. My wife almost certainly will - she's a very talented artist and designer and has already been in touch with some high profile companies including LucasArts and Raven Software  I need to get some qualifications first - I have plenty of experience but no significant qualifications, apart from a B-Tec. So that's something I hope to get sorted soon. So in 5 years, I hope we have a nice place and nice jobs. We'll probably be thinking of starting a family - we've actually pencilled that in for about 5 years from now actually :) But I'm also realistic. I know life has been good to me the past couple of years, but that life can also be cruel sometimes, and I fully expect to not have everything go my way :) You just gotta roll with the punches, etc, etc.

Oh yeah, feel free to elaborate on your answers........

Mmmmm, I think I did. I was bored :p

Roughly though, I expect to be in my own house, with a decent £40K sales/marketting/business job and own my own car.

To be honest, languages will always remain in my life. As will all the other hobbies from choices I've made in the past.

Photography, Web Development, Music (Guitar), Film etc.

Business orientated jobs will give me the oppertunity to earn a decent living and their is so much oppertunity, and it's never going to disappear as long as humans can rip-off other humans in some way or another.

Besides, no doubt I'll be able to use other languages in business :).

Phil.

1. No real expectations, so no disappointments there

2. No.

3. On a Tiki 38 cruising around the world, and visiting people from here en route.

1) Not at all! 5 years ago I was in Alton expecting to do GCSE's then A levels, and then I ended up in France! Just about to finish my International Baccalaureate, which I would've never seen coming if you'd have sat down and brainstormed possible ways your life could turn out.

2) In the end the IB has been hard work but very rewarding. I'm glad it's turned out this way as I've learned a new language, learned to "appreciate" (steady) the French (or rather, know better ways to rip them) and I've also come away from the experience with (what I hope is) a good educational diploma. Be glad to come back to England though. :)

3) The past 5 years have taught me that you can never predict the future with even the slightest bit of validity, so I'm not holding out for anything. In 5 years' time I'll be a year out of university, when I will have (hopefully) obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering. If all goes to plot, my new band should be just about starting a world tour ;)

1) i don't think i had any clue 5 years ago really but i can't say any of it has been much of a surprise.

2) yes and no, i've not done as well as i'm capable of and i've let myself down really, still, the future is where i'm looking and i've found someone i want to share the rest of it with

3) in a job where i can afford to have a house and be married, i'm not really sure exactly what yet though, probably with computers still, i cant se that changing, will probably want a kid on the way by then as well :o

Depends on how I look at things. I'd have liked to have seen things turn out better.

2) Are you pleased that it's turned out this way?
No.

3) Where do you see yourself in 5 more years?
Hopefully not in the position I'm in now.
