Thermal paste options

It depends. On a small CPU where you can get away with a pea sized dollop and then letting the block push it over the CPU? you'll get more.

That method doesn't work well on AM3+ CPUs because they're bigger and the heat comes from all over the contact plate due to the cores being loaded into the corners. I tend to spread it over on mine which also limits what pastes I can use (because some are like putty and don't spread well).

Most of you are missing the point... So I'll word it differently!

Will the Alumina give me more applications than the AS5, while I'm binning chips (have 2 CPU's and 2 board to bench, only keeping 1 of each)?

Well 14g is a lot more than 3.5g. It just depends mate. On thickness, viscosity, ETC. Just buy a big tube if you're tinkering :)

So the increase in mass does resolve to an increase in volume?

For some reason (probably the price point) I had in my mind that the Alumina was heavier so the volume would be the same (leading to the same number of applications) regardless the weight of the paste!

Well they sell them by weight, so denser compounds probably weigh more. I know that Ceramique is really thick and hard to spread and also comes in a weeny little tube. I'd get about three out of that tops.

On the flipside I bought some cheap crappy Cooler master stuff (that turns out to have been manufactured for the AMD Athlon XP as it came with a socket template lol) and it's huge and runny as heck. Mind you, it works OK so I can't complain :)

Haha yeah I've been using cheap stuff, but I now have a 2600K, 2700K with an Asus ROG Max IV E and an Asus ROG Max IV E Z to test... (I'm keeping the best of each for myself so really need to push them)!

I use MX-2 and MX-4. Have huge 30g syringes of them, ill never run out!

Non conductive, so doesn't matter if you are messy. I need them for VRMs, NB and GPUs, so the non conductive feature is a big plus!

The MX2 in an 8g pack seems the best buy of the MX pastes... But only as I know I'll never use a tube of 30g so not much point getting that much!

If only they did a tube of 15g/20g for £10 lol ;)
