Jeebus I remember when read & write was under 10 Mb/sec when I started..

Now look at the latest 160Gb Raptor as a single drive..

Some amazing results, I'd get a Raptor strait away if it wasn't so expensive.

Anyone know if they make a lot of noise? E.g. would they go in an otherwise quiet system, or do they click and whirr?

only under heavy use do they make a bit of noise, even so i don;t think they make that much more than a normal HDD. I have a 6month old 74GB one, so i don't know ifthey've changed recently.

do they make an difference that is worth the extra cash though?

That depends entirely on what you do with them/your point of view. For me, yes they're worth it. For many other people they may not be. If you often work with large numbers of small files that need to be accessed quickly, or very large files that need to be quickly scanned/read etc, then a disk like the Raptor with a low average access time and a high sustained transfer rate can make a very noticeable difference/improve your quality of life.
