why is it that when you get a new graphics card the next month a new game comes out that can only be played with a new graphics card...cant they make a graphic card to last a whole year worths of gaming....its mean and evil....my pocket are dead dry

is there such a card to last a whole year worth of gaming at high settings

high end graphics cards survive for quite a while but to play with all the eye candy then as technogly evoles your have to upgrade, that saying i have a friend with a 9250 agp and plays fear and ut2004 still :)

I'm just going to buy an X1800 XT 256mb in next few weeks, something like this will last till next year easily imo.

If i were you i wouldn't go spending £300 + on the fastest graphics card, i just dont think its worth it. There will be something out faster in no time.

My moto is always stay 1 step behind with technology :)

People are too fussy nowadays, everyone wants 60fps+
When something like Oblivion comes out, people would rather spend £300 on a new card than turn the res down or lower some detail.

You certainly dont NEED a new card to any new games, you can play anything out there on a 9800Pro for example, it'll just look crappy.

agree with Camalot. Unless you have money to burn, it's daft going for the very latest card all the time. Look at the X1800XT, £400+ on launch about 3 months ago, now sub £200. You can always sell your old card and just put a bit extra towards the newer one. I just paid £80 to upgrade from an X850XT to an X1800XT which I think's fair enough.

You got a 9250 playing F.E.A.R??

I go for the best value against performance. Then clock it within an inch of its life. I upgrade graphics once a year on average. i certainly dont want my games to look poo, but thesedays, its not that it`ll look poo, just run at 10 fps, and thats just not fun. Deep pockets wins all the time !!

People are getting more widescreen monitors etc.. for playing games and a low end card will just not cut it.

Every GFX upgrade I have had hasn't cost the earth.I just sold the previous gen card for a little loss.

Take my 7800 GT, I sold it ,lost around 50 and bought a 7900GT for 50 quid more.
:)

Oh Easy my friend, sell sell sell, and that little extra gets you the next card. Ive been doing that so i can fund my habit, just a shame you cant actually roll one up, and smoke it baby !!! ;)

Yea, i've just bought a widescreen. So im building a new system for it now. This one is 8yrs old as it is

Selling off your old card like that is pretty sensible imo. I think id do the same if i got the chance. Better than paying the £300+ full price tag eh

Why are you blaming the hardware? Its down the the game developers. If they choose to use all the new sparkling technology available then blame them.

It is mainly our fault. If we didn't buy the expencive stuff they would sell new things at lower prices so we brought them. But they know that some of us are suckers for new stuff with go faster stripes.

I'm not bitter :D

Jim

TBH if PC hardware is an interest then relatively speaking its not that much for a good 12 months gaming getting a top card.

How many of us have gone out and blown 60 quid on a night out?

6 nights out is a new x1900XTX of 7900 GTX so when you look at it like at least you have something to show for your money. :p

well, im still waiting for the day that they make a board with a GPU socket and a GDDR 3 (or what ever it will be by then) socket on the mobo. this would dramatically reduce the price of graphics as youd only be paying for the chip and memory, but i think its still many years out, plus many 2nd line providers (sapphire, powercolour ect) woud be put out of business or at the very least have to change there business model dramatically.

£60 on a night out? We're computer geeks. We shun daylight and our only friends exist dated RPGs.

Kidding of course. Though I do recognise that I was pretty happy with my old PC but somehow, once i got bit by the overclocking bug, 'pretty happy' no longer exists. There is only 'breaking the 30 second barrier in superpi', 'getting 10,000 in 3dmark05' and '2.5-3-2-6 @ 250mhz @ 2.6 volts'
