Right so basically I'm going to be going for my driving test soon and I'm worried something stupid will catch me out and cause me to fail..

So what would get me a major on a driving test and fail me?
Examples would be good if anyone has any!

Have you had any driving lessons?

personally I would not try to think of failing and what the worst I could do to fail, you should know all of that anyway.

2 "majors":

Serious and Dangerous

A "serious" fault is when you do something that COULD cause another road user to change speed or direction IF they was there.

A "dangerous" fault, is when you do something that a road user ACTUALLY DOES need to change speed or direction.

Turning at a junction without right of way.

Failing to do a 6 point check when pulling away.

Failing to MSM.

Breaking the speed limit by more than 1 or 2 m/h for a sustained period.

Killing a child

There's lots of things really.

A mate got a D on his test because he drove past someone getting on their car. I think he was too close or should have let them get in.

Well last driving lesson I had some pheasants walk out near the car when we were going down county lanes.. They moved luckily but had I needed to slam the brakes on to avoid hitting them would that have then failed me?

Make sure you don't hit any curbs, and don't pull out on anyone.

In regards to the above, i'm not really sure because as long as everyone was safe, and the driver behind you didn't swerve or anything like that, you would be fine.

Rule of thumb: Don't go in your test worrying, trust me it makes it harder. Just think of all the things your instructor told you and get on with it, it works trust me. :)

I got a major for setting off on a hill when a car was about 150 meters behind me even though it didn't cause him to slow down or change direction.. so yeah, good luck

I failed my first driving test with a major for stopping at a green-light when the filter lane changed to red.

It also didn't help someone had previously bashed into one of the other set of lights and they weren't pointing in the right direction, so what I learnt from that apparently was if in doubt keep going!

I got a minor for exactly that. So what you can take from this OP is, the instructors make it up as they go along. So just get on with it and do your best.

If you're going to fail do it properly, think of a Dukes of Hazzard style jump over Tower Bridge when it's opening/closing, grab the Examiners balls tightly in mid flight and yell 'YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MOTHER****ER!!'.

Okay buddy cheers for the advice! Shall try my best not to worry then!

Being in the correct lane (i.e. - keeping left). I failed on my first test because a second lane appeared, making the road a dual carriageway, and I didn't move over to the left so that was classed a major.

Also posting in the correct forum I'd class a major ;)

I got a major for driving down a single lane road which had parked cars all along my side at the head of a queue of traffic. A car came the other way when I was half way down the road (from a side road) and I had nowhere to go. The other car reversed back into the side road and let me past with no issue but apparently because the parked cars were on my side of the road they had the right of way.

When the examiner told me I failed for this I asked him what the right thing to do in that situation was and he refused to answer. To this day I don't know what else I could have done.
