Things to buy while in the US

Don't your radio stations broadcast on the even decimal point of frequency though?

Like over here the common radio stations are 88.9FM, 101.5FM, 107.7FM, etc and as such only have selections for the odd decimals (101.1 to 101.3, no 101.2 available). Aren't your equivilants 88.8FM, 101,4FM and 107.6FM?

Yes they do but you can normally switch to a European mode.

I decided on a Alpine in the end
http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/products/product.php?model=CDA-9857

only cost around $250

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07K, for $225

The SS anthony Gallo Micros Ti only cost around $140 each!!

Well, not really. I could site examples such as 98.8 Radio 1, 95.8 Capital, 103.1 Invicta, 100.9 Classic. All of which I can pick up on these frequencies from my bedroom. I've never seen a UK radio that could only tune to even frequencies :)

Well, then using a US HU you would not be able to receive Radio 1 or Capital.....

You can pick them up on 98.7 and 95.7 respectively, as well :p

Paras is right in that if you look out for "European" mode you should be fine.

I only replied to you so you could add to your trivia that, in the UK at least, stations broadcast on pretty much any frequency, and on quite broad ranges. I can pick up Classic FM on every frequency between about 100.5 and 101.1 with varying degrees of quality, "perfect" at 100.6 and 100.9 :)

Hrm, ok. I was just pointing out that US HU's cannot receive even tenths and I have never seen a "European" setting on one.

Interesting though that you folks have a much more varied selection of frequencies to play with......

I'm no expert on HUs by any means, but if you can flash an HUs firmware etc, then you'd be able to use it in any region you wanted.

Ping golf clubs :) Back the last time the $ was two to the £ my Old Man did exactly that. Went out to the States for a golfing holiday with an old bag and dolly clubs and came back with the same bag this time with shiny new Pings when they were like £750 here (this was 1982 BTW) but a quarter of the proce over there.

Im here until Friday and here's my list so far:

Sony Vaio SZ360P/C laptop
Dell E1705 laptop
Trainers, t-shirts and random clothes.
Lucky Charms cereal

Went down the apple store and got a 13 inch laptop bag for apple (for my sony vaio) today, some purfume for my sister.

The way im playing it with importing is my friend is bringing back one laptop (which I have loaded with my own stuff), Im bringing back the other.

Im mailing back the instructions and CDs for the laptops, chucking out the US type leads (I even bought UK twin [smaller than the kettle leads but similar] power leads which I'll connect up to the chargers when they're in my suitcase) so it should be fine. Only issue is the keyboard layout but I know for sure that apples that you buy in the UK have the US keyboard layout (atleast my friends one that he got in the Birmingham Apple store does) so I'll pretend to be ignorant to that fact.

Anyway, fingers crossed I wont be troubled.

I know it sounds sacreligious, but work them over a little so they look even SLIGHTLY used. Get some grubby fingerprints on them, put some tattered stickers on them (can be removed once you're home), scuff the bags around a little (can be cleaned up later). Put the laptop in it's case upside down a few times so the foamies are stretched out.

In other words, make it look like it's already survived the trip a few times instead of being fresh out of the box.

Oh, and you may be asked to fire it up, so do so before hand so you're not caught staring at the "Please register your copy of Windows" screen at customs.... ;)

I'm not recommending you do anything illegal, but to me the import tarrifs on personal items are illegal in what they charge. No, two wrongs do not make a right, but a couple hundred quid out of your budget is going to hurt the pocketbook. A couple hundred quid out of the government's coffers ain't even gonna' be noticed!!

anything electrical, however make sure it can run on 240volts, so you can just cut the plug of. If it cant handle 240volts you'll have to buy a converter as well, which is a pain in the neck.
