Hi guys,

We'll be spending two weeks with family near Toronto. We've not planned anything at all! Was just wondering if anyone had some good places to see and things to do whilst there? Don't mind travelling a couple of hours.

Thanks!!

Mal

I'd love to go to Toronto some day :) Will be interesting the places that people recommend.

As Azagoth said though, I will definatly be going to Niagara Falls when I go :)

Go up the CN Tower.

It's amazing it also has a glass floor up there for you to stand on.:D

Yeah you have to do that :) You can go up to a higher level than the glass floor bit which can be fun. Though it's a pain for photos as there is a metal fence type thing to stop you falling! Which you have to lean out onto to get good pics ;)

I lived there for 8 months last year, only just got back this March. What time of year are you going?

I recommend:

* CN Tower
* Niagara Falls + Niagara itself (there's a whirlpool and other things)
* Going to a Maple Leafs (ice hockey) or Blue Jays (baseball) game. There's also the Raptors (basketball) but they're a bit meh.
* Grabbing food in Little Italy (Collge St between Ossington Ave and Bathurst St)
* Eaton Centre is good for shopping etc (it's downtown and hard to miss)

There's more but I'm off out now. If anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer.

as others have said CN Tower, Niagara Falls,

Depends what you like but there's a Royal Ontario Museum which had quite a lot in it. There's also Toronto Zoo - rather spaced out so a lot of walking but have a lot of animals like bears and moose!! :D

if you look on tripadvisor.com there will be more on there

edi: oooh Toronto Island! Was great fun when i went. We hired those four seater bike things and had a brilliant time. Was the best part of the holiday haha :D

How'd you like it over there, and what made you come back? :p

Before I go, I recommend a CityPass when you get to Toronto. It includes:

* CN Tower
* Casa Loma (a castle)
* Ontario Science Centre
* Royal Ontario Museum
* Toronto Zoo

All of these (bar the Zoo) are downtown and accessible (the castle is a little out, though). The zoo is easy to get to via subway and bus, though.

Also, if you rent a car you can easily get to Montreal and Ottawa for a couple of nights if you get bored of TO.

I loved it so much I want to move back. I had a 1 year working visa (just finished Uni and wanted a year off before I start my Masters) so it was a case of having to come back rather than wanting to.

Toronto is a fantastic city to live and work in and I can't wait to get back there.

Do you know much about getting a visa to permanently move to Canada?

OK, last reply before I rush out. ;)

I've looked into it a bit, yeah. There's a couple of options available. The one most people go for is to get a non-student 1-year working visa through BUNAC, and then using that year to find a job out there. When the year is coming to a close you speak to your employer and hopefully, if they like you enough, they'll jump though a few bureaucratic hoops to get you to stay. The process isn't as easy as I'm making it out to be - there's a few conditions that have to be met, and you need to have enough points to be able to satisfy the visa conditions (age, work experience, education level, language (French/English) ability, relations etc.

I found British Expats to be a great place to find information. There's forums and a wiki there dedicated to Brits moving to Canada, the US, Australia and NZ. Check out the Canada immigration website for a points calculator so you can work out if you're eligible.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks matey :) I took the points test recently and it's looking pretty good :)
Will have to look further into it me thinks :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 75% sure I visited a Cheesecake Museum in Toronto. If I'm not having a brain fart, then try to look that up. Like I said though, I may be wrong but I know it was definitely in Canada. :p

Maid of the Mist is a bit rubbish, yeah. The falls themselves are pretty spectacular, though, and at winter all the railings and trees are covered in 1/2" thick ice due to the mist.

Niagara is very, very tacky indeed (though the casino area is pretty nice - a lot of hotels are being developed there at the moment) but the village of Niagara on the lake is very nice.

Queen Street West
Circa
Kensington Market
Bloor St. West

Depends what you're into really. The above haunts are quite alternative.
Haha I was living across from Circa in a Hostel, literally across the street, Canadiana.

Get yourself to Algonquin Park, 3-4 hours drive If I remember rightly, had a bit to drink so heads fuzzy and I am typing wel...! Amazing scenery, great for walks/canoeing, and if you can get a cheap tent and camp!

Little Italy on college street is nice, I lived near their too, nice place and some good cheap bars. Toronto Island is OK, worth going over to see it and get a cool view of the city.

And a must try is Burrito Boyz, incredible burriots and dirt cheap!
