Things to look out for when fitting a block to GTX 680?

Is there anything i should be cautious about when fitting an EK block to my gtx 680? It'll be my first time (virgin) so i want to be as careful and as clear as possible as to what i'm doing...


My last watercooling moment was when i got my EK H20 kit where i punctured 2 rads -_-... don't want a repeat ofc!!!


Any Guidance would be much appreciated.

Just take your time, have everything you need ready, check twice cut once and follow the instructions. Try not to over handle the thermal pads as the plastic will stick more when it gets warm, if this happens just pop the pads in the fridge for a few mins.
 
when i fitted my block:

1) try to handle the pads as little as possible, use a sharp scalpel and a ruler

2) if there is a line of small components to put pads on, i just made a long strip rather than faff around with lots of tiny bits of thermal pad

3) dont worry about being too precise with the thermal pads, if they are overhanging the chip a little, thats fine - but they shouldnt be too small, you need the whole chip covered
 
If you have trouble getting the pads to stay put, drop a small amount of Tim on the chips before the pads.

It shouldn't be too hard now as the stand offs are physically fixed to the block. Older blocks used plastic spacers which were a nightmare to fit (for me at least).

I'm cutting all risk to zero with my 680, tech lab pre fitted block, warranty with ocuk, win. Will be putting a review of the tech lab card up in the graphics forum once I have it, feel they don't get a mention as much as they should.
 
just out of interest, does anyone know what TIM OcUK use when they fit stuff instore like waterblocks/heatsinks etc?
 
Afaik yup, I think its a 4g tube, use what they need and throw the rest in the box for you should you ever need to refit the stock cooler or reseat the block.

As I said when I get mine hopefully early next week I'll be doing a review, covering all the finer points, especially the fact in most cases tech lab cards work out cheaper :)

Should i cover the whole gpu chip like i do with the cpu and flatten it out with a spreader so it's even?
 
If its anything like the Aquacomputer block which I fitted at the weekend, it was very easy but you will need a torx screwdriver to remove a lot of the screws there are something like 17 in total some torx some not.

Like everyone else said just take your time and it wont be long until you get these stupid low temps mine idles under 30 and peaks at 39-40.

For mine I used TIM for the core and the memory modules and the other parts used thermal tape very easy to install.
Was instructed to put blobs on the memory and spread on the core.

"Please note: Thermal paste is not included and needs to be purchased separately. EKWB recommends Gelid GC-Extreme for best performance. Torx T6 screwdriver needed for dissasembly of the factory heatsink/fan solution is also not included."

I had to get my torx piece from Halfords for £3.50 was for a socket set.
 
No thermal paste either :O?


Hmmm i have a lot left over from when i fitted my cpu block, should be okay.
 
I have some MX-4 paste left over :D


I've just checked my tool box and i dont have a T6.. the smallest i have is a T10!
 
Good thing you made this thread really.

I had about 20 mins to get to town and find a T6 before closing time.
Only had T8 at work as well so went with my Aquacomputer supplied one would be ok, it wasn't it died on the 2nd screw.
I found Homebase only went to T8 but Halfords had 1 T6 left but only for a socket tool.
