Think I can still make a 2.1?

Ok, just finished the last of my exams, and picked up remaining coursework.

If my exams go as I felt they did, I should be heading for 55% average for 2nd year...

Not perfect, but having year 2 weighted as 30% and 3rd as 70% I still feel I can pick up the marks for a 2.1...

Having 55% in Year 2 = 16.5% towards final grade.
Having 63% average or more in Year 3 = a 2.1 overall.

Think I could average 63%-75% in Year 3? Where I lost out on marks this year, it was down to motivation and organisation... If I can avoid leaving every piece of coursework till the night before it should help.

Is Year 3 a lot harder than Year 2? I'm pretty sure I have the ability as I can do some work to 1st level overnight, I lose chunks of marks though when I leave a task too big to the last minute.

Neeeeeed a 2.1!!!11!12.1! :(

It will

Harder? Not if you have the ability. Manage your time and you'll get the grade you deserve. Best of luck.

I remember thinking the same thing 13 years ago. I got it (the 2:1) but I'm damned if it made a difference in the career path I chose, heh.

Not sure about your course but in my Uni, I can base my degree entirely on my 3rd year's IF my combined 2nd and 3rd year % result is lower than the 3rd year alone.

If your course allows for that, then you'll just have to be a hermit for a year IF you want 2.1 and above. I'll be living in my department's building, Student Union and Library, running up and down the sports office for my club and in and out of libaray and labs for my last year of pharmacology course - missed my mark for 1st class this year me thinks.

In my class, a lot of people's grades picked up in the 3rd year. People were a bit more mature, most people realised that it was time to put some real effort in and generally you can usually expect a half-decent mark from your dissertation.

At my university, you also got a lot more freedom in which modules you could choose in the 3rd year, which meant people could choose stuff that interests them.

55% -> 63% isn't a great leap, but you'll no doubt have to put some extra effort in to achieve it.

I just had a look through my grades, and the ones which I lost out a lot on, are the ones I left till the night before or morning of hand in = 40-50%

Some weren't always like that and I picked up a few 1st's doing that.

My general sort of grade has been improving through this year, going from 40-55's in the first half of term up to 60-72's for 5 pieces of work.

I don't find the work hard in the slightest, it's motivation and time keeping that I let myself down with. I don't think I've started a piece of coursework in less than 3 days before the deadline.

Next year will definetely be differen't I'm determined to get that 2.1 I've been told I need...

p.s. course is Forensic and Crime Scene Science.

Just try and get all your coursework finished with plenty of time left, and not a few days before. You'll feel better after you've finished them earlier.

Best of luck, dude. :)

i am jealous of your course! Im doing criminology and i think ive worked out that im coming out with a similar percentage this year.

kind of woke me up to how hard i need to work next year. need to attend everything and be more motivated

Yeah I just looked at what I could aim for to get a 1st, I'd need to average 76% - 80%...

Seems difficult.

Depends what sort of percentage of my year my Dissertation is worth next year.

Just be thankful you're not in my position. I need a 68% average from this term to scrape a 2:1 because my split is 40:60 second year:third year. Being stupid in the second year wasn't so clever!

63% is very easy to get if you put in a little work.

I didn't think the fact it's weighted made any difference.

Get 55% in Year 2 (worth 40%) and you have 22%

Get 55% in Year 3 (worth 60%) and you have 33%

Overall it's still 55%, even with the 40/60 weighting.

I think its a good idea to make the second year contribute a large part to the final grade. My course the first and second years mean nothing along as you achieve a better grade each year. This of course leads to a high drop-out and failure rate because of the shock of the workload needed. This year their not even posting results on the public noticeboard, instead their emails results to the students...

Don't worry about percentages. Just try your best and at least you know that you didn't let yourself down.

The point is that if the split was more in favour of the third year, I could have recovered my marks more easily, given that I messed up the second year.

For instance:

A mark of 50% in the second year (worth 40%) requires me to get 66.6% in the third year to get 60% overall.

A mark of 50% in the second year (worth 30%) requires me to get 64.3% in the third year to get 60% overall.

Your mark in the third year has more "drag" as it were, against the poor average in the second year if the weighting favours the third year.
