Think I need a new PSU....

a 970 now looks the superior choice, even at idle I can feel heat off this card.I suspect I wouldn't need a new PSU either.
My old 7850 and GTX 260 were both fine, but I was able to use a 6-pin PCI-e power cable from the PSU with those. They don't seem to work on the 290X at all.

Well you don't even know the make or model of the PSU. I suspect it won't be fine, you can take the risk then regret it later when the PSU damages the components and goes up in smoke.

Like said PSU you do not want to skimp , I repeat do not. So take the friendly advice :)

I am getting a new PSU, and I do know the make and model of the current one(s) (I'm not repeating it tho ;) )
The problem with it is it has 4 12v rails at 20A and I don't have the correct cables to make it work standalone. I've had it for 6-7 years so it's done me well :)
I should be borrowing one tomorow to confirm that the new gfx card is completely OK.
