If someone wanted to they could find out more about you than your public facing Facebook time line shows anyway so all in all this is a massive exercise in having a grumble for the sake of it?

Anyway as others have said, the privacy settings exist for this reason based 9 who you share your timeline stuff with. Use them. ..

As a quick test last night, I actually logged out of Facebook, and then tried to look myself up using the Facebook people directory.

There was no result at all matching me. I don't know what I did to my settings in the past, but I must have done something right.

It's being phased in gradually. You'll get a notification when it's been applied to your account.

Exactly - they may not be incredibly powerful but there are privacy settings in facebook so everyone really should make the most of them.
