Thinking about becoming a donor

I've been a donor since i got my drivers license, i dont see why i cant give someone else the chance of survival if im already a goner.

I'd love to give blood, but being a bit afraid of needles, makes it hard :(
Would like to maybe use it as a way to get over the phobia though

No I'm not an organ donor but rather an organ recipient. I received a kidney from my Mother just over a year ago and it's given me a new lease of life...

If you are serious about organ donation then perhaps someone somewhere will be thanking you from the bottom of their heart when you are not in a position to need your organs...

It's a very commendable thing you do friend...

:)
Yep, basically one of my friends is a recipient and he's now 14 years older than they expected him to live. He's one of the most generous friendly blokes you could meet and to see someone like that get a new life makes you wonder why you'd want to waste all your insides when you go. It's not like I'm going to need them when they throw me down a hole in the ground is it?

im a theatre nurse and assist in taking organs for transplantation, awsome but very sad job, my youngest was 4 yrs old, my most recent was a new technique called living donors, a person very close to death may be brought to theatres and left to pass away in the anaesthetic room (with family) and with a cetain time period we have to take the organs (usually kidneys).

all that wish to know more about this just shout me. im truly privaledged to witness this most of the time!

That's pretty unbelievable really. Is it just because of a higher risk of certain diseases or what? Surely there is a fairly equal chance of someone who isn't gay contracting AIDS or something similar.

Apparently it's because of the increased risk of HIV... which is a bit old-fashioned.

They won't let me give blood either, not that I would have done anyway :o

It probably won't :D I just looked away and bit a piece of leather. Now I'm surrounded by the damn things and have to watch the gf jack up a couple of times a day as she's diabetic. I have SERIOUS needle phobia. Nearly puked when I jabbed her myself, had to go and sit down to clear my cold sweat.

The reason this shocked me so much is if I was a doctor, standing over you with a sick little 12yo girl on her last legs because he kidneys are shot, knowing your probably going to die from your injuries or be a human vegetable for the rest of your life…

…I’d let you die and save the girl.
This would be a serious breach of the Hippocratic Oath. Any Doctor who would make this decision is a disgrace to the profession.

Don't know if they even have to take the Oath these days. Wouldn't surprise me :(

Back OT, I'm not a donor. I don't ever plan to be one. And I'd never accept a transfusion, even at the risk of my life. Not a Jehova's Witness, just a choice :p

Unfortunatly, because I lived in Europe for a certain amount of time during certain years I am not allowed to give any blood or plasma or bone marrow. I have tried numerous time but each time they ask that question I answer honestly and they decline me.

when i am dead you can have what you want, and i agree if i was in a bad way i would rather die to give someone else a better life.

Always been too nervous to give blood, don't know why needles don't bother me

Do you mean whilst you are alive or dead?

i.e. do you want to donate your organs after you die, or do you mean donate a liver or something whilst you are still alive?

Who to? To a family member or to the highest bidder?

More info please...

I've been giving blood for 8 years now. Alls well and good there, even though I hate pain the worst bit is the needle ***** in the finger.

I'm on the bone marrow list, but haven't been used yet. Someone I work with has had a bone marrow donation. Saved his life. If you are a blood donor, sign up. It's easy to do at your next session.

I carry an organ donor card, but that hasn't been used yet either!?!
Seriously, I don't post much (as you can see) but what made me post is that 12 months ago a friend passed away suddenly. She was an organ donor, and it was a little reassurring to know at least somebody somewhere got *some * good from her situation.

Similar here.

I donate platelets every month on average (donated yesterday in fact) and am on the bone marrow list. I also have a donor card and my family are aware of my wishes. After I've snuffed it, they can take what they like. I won't need it and I won't be able to feel it when they cut me open and pilfer all my organs.

Really don't understand the concept of "I don't like the idea of someone cutting me open and taking my organs" if I'm honest. You're dead! You don't need them. Would you rather they rotted along with the rest of you or went on to help save another person's life? Each to their own I guess.
