What do you guys reckon is the best one to get!!!

I really like the look of the VW Golf GT and fancy the 2.0 TDI GT SPORT (140)...

Does anyone own one, what do you think about it!!

and... what kind of deals should I be looking for from the dealer.

On the plus side, you ought to get a good price when you come to sell it. Golfs seem to command a price premium for some reason.

People always say this so about 3 years ago I calculated how much money you'd lose on a new Focus versus a new Golf over 3 years and found the Golfs inflated purchase price and lack of discounting through dealers meant despite the higher residuals, it still cost more in depreciation than the Ford.

Not that I'm saying get a Focus instead, I simply used that as the comparison.

£18k is a LOT of money. It can buy virtually any car you desire. Or it can buy a diesel hatchback.

Quoted for truth. If you're not fussed about having a brand new car, you could get some awesome machines that have only been on the road a year or two, and a private plate so your neighbours will never know ;) Let some other mug take the depreciation!

agreed, it is a lot of money if buying second hand...... it would get you a nice golf r32 ;)

Had a few hours is a Diesel Golf GT TDI the other week, usual TD boost, nothing too gret, handling didn't feel that smooth, felt cumbersome, just really didn't enjoy it.

I'm probably not one to tell you what to spend your money on, but I wouldn advise against doing so on this.

Driven my mates TDI 170 with DSG gearbox.

Really quick car and very refined inside. Typical VW really.

But like many are saying. You could get a better car for the money.

If I was the sort of person who gets ridiculously excited at the prospect of hurling £18 grand at a Volkswagen dealer to drive around in a Golf, then I would do so and leave with an 07 GTI not a 140bhp diesel.

140bhp diesels are for people who the fleet manager doesnt like.

not everyone wants the same in a car though....

I wouldn't dream of spending that on (to me)a mundane car but everyone ha different things they look for in a car. I have a diesel mk4 anniverssary for the record as I needed a diesel

But most people decide what they want based on information they have to hand, knowledge they already posess and suchlike. If somebody doesnt realise, for example, what else you can buy for the money it's very easy for them to decide they 'want' something inferior.
