Thinking about getting a Golf GT

Really quick car and very refined inside

Really quick compared to...?

Seriously, for 18k you could do 100 times better. IE. look at MrLOL's post.

Just have a look around at what you could get for 18k before you decide that a Golf GT is the bestest c4r ev4r init!

Plastics in new VW's nowadays feel cheap and not like there rivals in terms of quality I don't think, my oldman drives a Golf Plus TDI and it aint a bad car - just it aint a great car either, the dashboard on it is like all new VW's hard plastic like something out of a peugeot. Not soft touch materials.

I would not spend £18k on a Golf GT.

The dash on both the golf MKV and the Golf plus both use soft touch plastics.

What I would say though is that the overall quality feel seems to be very hit and miss from car to car. (ie one golf could feel very well put together whereas another could feel like it was made by a child with a lump hammer).

A lot of things. You could buy worse cars which are slower for the same money.

And I was talking about the 170bhp version. 0-60 in under 8 seconds and masses amount of torque. And it can be remapped ;)

These are actually very good cars and i miss mine. As said get the 140 and remap it as much better than the 170. I would not buy new though as total waste of cash.

Mine when mapped consitently returned 39 mpg at the worse and that was me thrashing the living daylights out of it! If i was kind got around 50+. Handling was pretty good all things considered and held its own around the country roads where i live. Grip also was good if not excellent on the 18's i had. 225 wide F1's and all was well with the world. Terrible in the ice and snow though, worse than any car i have owned even with bigger tyres.

Very strong engine if a little poor at low speeds. 3rd and 4th just pull and pull and a great car for long journeys with good seats. I had mine for 2 years and did 66k in it. Only thing that went wrong was a plastic clip in the seat.

Inside is pretty good and nothing broke or bent. I would defo get one again in all honesty. But not NEW!

Why did you reply to my thread with posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the car that I'm interested in... Touche

because im trying to help you

You're going to be 18 THOUSAND pounds worse off

and have nothing to show for it other than a diesel golf hatchback. I mean for gods sake man, look at what 13k gets you

Your just throwing money away.

who needs a remap when 18k can get you a Lotus 111R ffs ?

thats a serious ammount of money to spend on a golf.

Ive currently got a 170 GT on hire, pleasent enough car, nice chassis, but a bit spartan inside, its expensive for what it is - £20.5k, no xenons or any other nice gadgets.

I think whilst the car is nice to drive, the quality isnt all that inside, and thats coming from a Focus driver, and the economy isnt as good as stated, and when driven hard its as bad as the ST.And my god is that engine tractor-ish or what.

Id buy an A3 instead or a Leon or a Skoda, if you want VAG.

Your point is sound but your examples are ridiculous and end up hampering the point you are making. It's quite obvious that somebody in the market for a VW Golf Diesel isn't a Lotus Elise buyer.

The last golf i drove was a new one in 2005.
It was only the 90bhp diesel one, but it was quite nice.

I have no idea how good they are 3 year later, but I doubt there has been a drastic increase in "niceness" in the past 3 years.
They are expensive for what they are, they are not 18ks worth of nice.

My mate has a brand new TDi 130 for work.

Its nice enough. Its tidy, well put together, economical, comfortable and I'm sure its ideal for work.

Rather boring though and certainly not where my 18k would go if I 'had' to buy new.

If you really must have a 140 Golf, buy one 2 years old or so, as people are suggesting. The 170 from two years ago is £14k, so the 140 must be around £12k-13k....it's exactly the same car with a few more miles on it and has already taken the big chunk of depriciation.

The Golf V IS a very good hatchback type car provided you avoid the low powered versions. Had the GT 2.0 Tdi on hire last year and have also driven the GTi. The GT is a good car if you can live with the 'clackety clack' engine - well built, looks good, handles well, reasonably quick, refined on the motorway, but poor ride quality around town, particularly in terms of ironing out ridges and potholes. The GTi was fantastic is terms of being able to sling it about at high speed, but the ride quality suffers as a result of the bigger wheels, lower profiled tyres and tweaked suspension. Both cars are sooooo much better than the old Mk IV Golfs and the other VAG cars from that generation of MkIV based Golfs.

Not in a million years would I pay £17,000+ for one though.

From the looks of it you want a 5 door? They are nice to drive, delivering good mpg and has a nice look. I would advise NEVER to get the 170, they are so terrible. If you want the power just remap the 140, you'll even get 1 or 2 mpg better whereas the 170 just fails. Though the 170 is fast it's not worth it and a remap often causes problems.

What on earth are you jibbering on about?

right well, we currently have a 1.9tdi golf (90 BHP model) that i have driven a lot, my uncle used to have the car you are looking for and have sat in it a few times the 2.0 GT TDi

as for all these idiots saying 18K will get you a far better car, the best value for money cars out there at the moment are Golf's

http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews-by-type.aspx?RG=2

look golf is number 1 on this list at what car

ill talk about our own golf first, it does 55mpg and is very nippy when it needs to be, handling is also superb, my uncle told me the great thing about his golf was you could push it as hard as you want to and it never seemed to run out of diesel like any of his other cars

he also currently owns an x5, range rover sport, golf petrol, audi a3 3.2, astra, all of his cars are brand new to 3 years old max

so he has driven a lot of cars from varying ranges and he says that the golf was one of the best buys for under 20K

as for all this depreciation business, the golf holds it s value better than 90% of other cars out there

its german engineering you get what you pay for

it only needs a service every 20,000 miles (average)

read through this review

http://www.whatcar.com/car-review-summary.aspx?RT=627

there is a reason why it gets 5 stars and is in the number 1 position, probably because its the best car you can buy for under 20 grand brand new

if this is the model you want go for it, its very good, but if you wanna save some money go for the model we have the 1.9tdi

the guy obviously wants a golf, dont listen to anybody else, if its the car you want go for it, put it this way, i dont think what car have got it completely wrong do you? i have also driven the 1.9tdi a lot so i can say it is a fantastic car, extremely reliable, built to last and by that i mean, nothing should break on it for 10+ years, whereas most other cars like a ford cant compete with the quality of VW

In another 2 years, how much do you think that will be worth? I reckon you'll easily loose another 4 grand in the next two years on it.

So you havent avoided the depreciation at all.

4 grand in 2 years is nothing, and there is no way to avoid depreciation unless you wanna buy a 10 year old banger

he has the money if he wants to buy brand new let him, myself personally have never liked the idea of buying a second hand car, or second hand clothes, or second hand anything for that matter, you pay a premium for something brand new but i'd rather pay the premium and get something nobody else has touched rather than take the risk of some idiot owning it before and treating it like crap

Hi there.

Perhaps you should think about things before calling us all idiots; we arn't suggesting buying new cars.

Buy a car that is 2 or 3 years old and you'll get a hell of a lot of car for your money, much more than on a brand new golf, or hell, you'll get exactly the same car for a lot less money!

It may well be the best car you can buy new for under 20k (debatable), but it's definitely not the best car you can buy under 20k which is under 3 years old. So what you arn't getting that "new car" feel, it has some miles on the clock, but is that really worth 5 or 6 grand? Plus you get a better car, it's wins all round.

To treated like crap comment; That's why you test drive cars, check everything out and don't buy the first one you get your eyes on.
