Thinking about getting a new CRT monitor.

I've never been all that impressed with LCD and I think my CRT is getting to the age now where anything could happen. Can anyone recommend a good CRT? 19'' would be as small as I'm willing to go.

I've not really kept up to speed with LCD. Could I be converted by one of the newer ones?

I love my dell p1130 and the best bit is they go for about £30 which is hard to argue with!! But my next monitor will almost definatly be a 24" lcd as many of theirs original failings have been sorted and they do look lovely. If you've got the space you can get a lot of screen for not very much money and even if you decided you wanted to change in 6 months to a lcd it wouldn't be a big loss, and would probably still be worth about the same.

Indeed, I think viewsonic might still make a 19" but it's not supposed to be great at higher resolutions. I paid £35 for a used Dell P1130 (sony trinitron tube) from a popular auction site and it works fine and the picture is amazing.

Yeah refurbs are good, I got a Sony E530 from the auction site and it's practically good as new.

I'll probably go for a 24" LCD next though, just need to save up for a decent one which makes movies look good.

If you can find one, don't hesitate to buy a Sony GDM-W900.

It's a 24" widescreen CRT and they are absolutely stunning monitors - I wish I had never sold mine :(

Sadly, they are very, very hard to find refurbished now. If you are lucky though, make sure you have plenty of desk space and someone to help you carry it!

Seconded. I saw one of these in a local tech store and it was magnificent. It was a completely ridiculous size though, would have taken up my entire desk...

Keep an eye out for second hand Iiyama Pro series. I bought a second hand 22" for £60inc and if they are part of a good series then they pretty much last for ever lol!

E.g. the 19" Pro 450 series used cheaper capacitators so they were famous for dying after a while..

I have seen the above Sony's refurbed with A1 Case+Screen (mint) go for over $780 at auction site.

They do look the best CRT ever though and aint much bigger than many 17-19" cases (the one I seen was Pro Calibrated so the onscreen picture card had no normal CRT Geo issues at edges).

I have that exact same monitor.

I've had it a good few years now and love it!

:D

£40 - that's a bargain . I can't remember how much I paid but it was over £200.

I've at least got a better idea what to look out for.

I'm going to stick with my CRTs, I've got the deskspace, and I'm not at all fussed about how "aesthetically pleasing" LCDs are. The Sony GDM-W900 sounds at the very least like a moist dream.

Another good option for refurb CRT's is the Eizo range. I picked up an Eizo F77S 21'' CRT for about £30 from a local computer dealer which is still superb after over 2 years.

Look out for anything with a Trinitron or Diamondtron tube, they're the best. You'll need to read the full specs to find out tube type though. Brand wise you're looking at Sony/Dell/Iiyama/NEC(Mitsubishi)/Lacie/Eizo/Viewsonic although just buying one of those brands isn't a guarantee you'll get a Trinitron/Diamontron tube. Another way to identify a good tube is the tube type will be listed as aperture grille rather than shadowmask.

I see. I'm going to dig around and get clued up and get one in the next month or so, if this one doesn't go in the meantime.

The bugger is that most of the refurbs and used CRTs are pick up only on the auction site.
